[Solved] repeated crashes

Post by tom9940 »

I'm running Windows 10 on a Dell Inspiron PC and using OO 4.1.3.
Yesterday it worked just fine. Today from the time I turned the computer on this morning I can get nothing done. I have 10 spreadsheets I update every day. Today all I have to do is look cross-eyed at my computer and the app (not the computer) crashes; I recover it and it crashes; I recover it and it crashes; etc. etc. etc. etc. I'm thinking it is something at your end not mine. How do I get my work done?

The LibreOffice 6.1.6 x64 version works for me continuously and without problems on Win 10 x64.
Try it.

Start Windows in Safe Mode and try OpenOffice in that mode. If it runs OK, then the problem is some driver or program that runs only in Windows normal mode.

I tried it in Safe Mode and it worked fine. So how do I find (and remove) the offending entity?

Systematic detective work! Start by downloading and installing the latest driver for your graphics chip from the manufacturer's site.

Wouldn't the manufacturer be Apache since this is Open Office we're talking about? Does Apache have drivers?

The drivers are for your operating system, in this case Windows 10. Windows 10 does not always install the correct drivers itself, hence my suggestion.

Why would there be a driver issue overnight when MS did not give me a d**** forced update overnight and how do I update the drivers?

MS issues updates on a daily basis. Not all of them require a forced update (aka reboot) to do the installation.
Your best bet for the most up-to-date drivers, is to visit the site for the manufacturer(s) page.
The video drivers are one of the drivers that causes the most problems, thus Rory's suggestion that you start with your video drivers.
You have drivers for each piece of hardware on your system and you have the fastest access to that information.
If you feel that you are not of a skill level to handle this, then taking your system to a local PC technician would be my suggestion... just remember, the tech (or the company he/she works for) is probably going to charge you money.

Something happened overnight. We know it was not a concealed OpenOffice update, as OpenOffice doesn't do that, so the obvious candidate is Windows 10. Or else, some corruption that may have happened on your computer due to a failing disk or an improper OO shut-down. But the Safe Mode test points strongly to a problem in Windows normal mode.

I tried to open OO in Safe Mode today and the crash problem is there now as well. You keep saying go to the manufacturer's site; is that not Apache? I see nothing there that applies. What do I do, specifically?

Yes. The LO can open and save the .ods, .xls and .xlsx formats. But it is the best to store your important documents in the native, international standard ODF (.ods) file format.

Thanks for your help, everyone. The problem seems to be fixed. I downloaded Libre 6.2.5 and updated 1 spreadsheet; everything worked like it was supposed to, although the icons at the top are a little different, but that is a minor problem & will not stop me from working with the spreadsheets (and text documents, too, as needed).

You can choose an another icon set from the list of the existing icon themes by the menu item:
Tools - Options - LibreOffice - View - User Interface - Icon style

Besides that the LibreOffice has a new feature: it can import more icon sets in .oxt extension format.
There are more (older and newer) icon themes on the extensions page:
https://extensions.libreoffice.org/exte ... ssic-theme
https://extensions.libreoffice.org/exte ... icon-theme
https://extensions.libreoffice.org/exte ... icon-theme
https://extensions.libreoffice.org/exte ... icon-theme
https://extensions.libreoffice.org/exte ... icon-theme
Downloaded and install the icon set what you needed.
