OpenOffice crashing

Post by Bruce Biley »

I just loaded OpenOffice 4.1.6 on a brand new laptop I just purchased a couple of days ago. It crashes everytime I do a find search on a spreadsheet. What is wrong?
I have been using OpenOffice for years on my old laptop, and it has worked perfectly. Can somebody tell me what to do to fix it?

Try resetting your user profile. To do that, shutdown OpenOffice. Open any folder and in the address bar near the top enter %appdata%\openoffice\4
That will take you to a folder containing a folder named user. Rename that to user_old. Restart OpenOffice and you should get the registration screen. Is Calc now stable?

The Find search works fine in a text document, it only crashes OpenOffice when a Find search is done in a spreadsheet. I tried the user change, that did not work.

Does it do it with all files? or just with one file?

If with all files then:
1. Uninstall AOO
2. Delete the User Profile at C:\Users\xxxxxx\AppData\Roaming\OpenOffice\4\user.
3. Download AOO from http://www.openoffice.org/download/index.html
4. Install AOO

Also be sure to have installed a 32-bit Java as well as the conventional 64-bit Java.

Check that your Win 10 installation is fully updated. There are many reports of some Win 10 updates causing OO problems, which have been cured by later revised updates.

You could also install https://libreoffice.org instead of OpenOffice. LibreOffice is the actively developed successor of OpenOffice which is walking dead meanwhile.

I have deleted AOO and reinstalled it, same result - any search in the Find screen in a spreadsheet crashes the whole thing.

This is not a typical Windows application. Removing and installing the same software again simply puts the same bytes into the same places. The recommendation was to rebuild your profile folder or substitute OpenOffice with LibreOffice.

Hello all,
I'm probably going to violate some community guidelines with this post but as this is my first and probably last contribution to the forum I'm posting nonetheless.
As a long time user of OO, I have been having the same crashing problem described in many threads on this forum for about two years. There seemed to be no rhyme or reason to the constant crashing. Maybe it was the carpet pi55ers. We just don't know. I have tried every solution offered without success. If I open more than 2 spreadsheets (and I often have 5 or 6) OO is going to crash. Guaranteed. As long as I saved the doc often and quickly there was usually not a problem. Except, of course, when OO crashed while saving the doc. So, to make a long story short I finally tried the one solution I had rejected out of hand because of how much I like OO. No, I didn't change my user profile AGAIN. I took a great leap of faith and downloaded LibreOffice and ABRACAPOCUS--PROBLEM SOLVED! So good luck and Happy Trails to everyone struggling with the same problem!
I'm going bowling

Similarly, I have had near constant crashing for at least a year. I have reinstalled OO & updated to OO 4.1.6 and still same crashing :x .
tried to revert to an old MS KB4338819 but have apparently lost that opportunity as MS Windows 10 has updated away from KB4343909.

Seeking a solution! Don't want to live in fear of losing my work every 30 seconds like I have been for TOOOOOO long.

Have you tried resetting your user profile as I explained above? Reinstalling the program does not reset the user profile.

Make sure your Windows 10 is fully updated as suggested above by RoryOF

As Villeroy said above, a reinstall of AOO won't solve the problem,

So Win 10 is freshly updated. AOO has been reinstalled 6 times after uninstalling and deleting all USER profiles & rebooting.

Problem persists :( :-x

You will appreciate that AOO is perfectly OK for millions and millions of other users so the problem lies on your PC.

1. Uninstalling and re-installing does not reset the profile so reset the profile - see Resetting the user profile.

2. Do a test. Start your PC in SAFE MODE (google for how). If AOO stops crashing the problem is some program which starts when the PC boots. Identify which program is causing the problem.

thx John.
I actually did delete my user profiles and had to rebuild them each time I reinstalled AOO. I will try the Safe mode.

It does seem this AOO crashing problem is not isolated and has chronic overtones based on the threads here. Otherwise, AOO has broad appeal

Are you searching from the toolbar or the Find & Replace dialog.
There were some reports earlier about the search from the toolbar not working in Windows 10.
The Find & Replace dialog worked fine.

I have been using Open Office for many years now and have loved it until this last year. Crashing a constant issue. I had an Surface Pro 2, After updating my Open office one day my crashing problems started. If I save very couple of lines /entries no crashing happened. Forget to safe unusually often and beware! After trying everything I could think of that could be the problem I decided to get a brand new computer (Lenovo Idea pad flex -Windows 10 Home). Guess What! Open office still crashing. Please find a fix or Open Office may find it self a Closed office and that would be sad indeed!

Did you try the suggestions in this, and other similar topics that have been posted?
Not everyone s experiencing crashes and you seem to be in an unusual situation with it crashing that often.
Did you try resetting your OpenOffice user profile? If not, try that first.
There's a tutorial in the Tutorial section about your OpenOffice User Profile.

I've been having the exact same problems for the last month or two. Every time I open a spreadsheet - and I tested this on multiple files - I basically have a limited number of times I can enter data before it WILL crash. I started saving every 2-3 minutes, but eventually even saving would trigger the crash.

I tried the solution of uninstalling, deleting the profile, and reinstalling. Exact same problems. Based on what I've read on this forum I suspect there's a specific conflict that only a handful of people are experiencing. But I'm tired of fighting with it, so for now I'm switching over to LibreOffice.

You have not specify:
  1. which Windows edition is used
  2. if reinstallation has been done with admin right privilege
  3. if crash occurs with one or multiple documents

Reports are that a particular Windows 10 update some months ago caused this instability in Calc; this was later cured by a more recent update. You should check that Windows 10 has installed _all_ updates, then restart your computer.

1: It's in my signature, I'm on Windows 10
2: I assume it was the correct admin privilege, it's a new PC that I set up.
3: As I said in my original statement, "I tested this on multiple files"

Try starting Windows in Safe Mode (Google for how) and running OpenOffice with Windows in Safe mode. If OO runs OK in that mode then the problem is caused by a program or driver that runs only in Windows normal mode.

I have found that MS default antivirus crashes calc every few times I paste something.
That occurred at LEAST since version 1809 and then into 1903 on several computers.
I tried many suggestions, but it happened on fresh installs, too.
Then I decided to set the program file location as "Excluded" and problem was solved.
Don't know if that is relevant to your situation.
Maybe it is not as big a derp as the OO install failing due to inability to create shortcut on desktop, but SOMETHING to note....

Same problem for me since a couple of days.
I've installed the most recent version, manually (because the help->check for updates brings up the "Error reading data from the Internet. Server error message: ." error message).
I've removed the user profile as mentioned by others, today, after a couple of hours work, and forgetting ( ) to manually, frequently save, OpenOffice Writer crashed and i've lost all my today's work. :knock:  :knock:

It simply closed itself as i was typing, couldn't recover the document, no error messages, nothing. :( :(

Are there any debugging techniques?

In the absence of a valid solution, i'm turning to another software :(

Some posters have suggested that the problem goes away with a move to LibreOffice.

I suspect it might also go away with a move away from Windows

None of the posters here has followed the advice to do a test by starting the PC in Safe Mode - google for how.

Do so. Now tell us what happens - does the problem go away?

Hi All, I have the same issue, have followed most advice found in these forums. crashed 3 times in 5 minutes this morning, each crash set the file OO Base form, back further than the previous crash despite aggressive file saving.
I I cant solve this today I will be moving to another program, the situation is beyond tolerance
