On going spell checker problem

Post by agatornz »

for ages now i have not been able to rely on my open office spell checker, now i think i have found the problem .. when i installed OO, i went to Tools>options>language settings>languages> default languages for the document and changed the Western feild to New Zealand English. ( given i am in that country..)

It worked as expected for a little while,, then i started having this problem that when i opened a writer file or paste one in to spell check.. the spell checker would immediately accounce the spelling was ok.. even when i knew it wasnt ( with test words)

Then i discovered that if i went back to the Western feild of the languages window and changed it to English UK, magically the spell checker would start working againg properly, but each time closed and re opened ..open office it would not be working and on investigating the same menu the Western feild would have changed back to New Zealand english.

Next i changed all the settings - locality and currency to reflect the UK,,,,no difference..

Tonight i changed the Western feild to (blue tick) Default English UK, and found that the spell checker was now working every time i opened a new document or closed and opened OO.

so i have just left it set to the UK.. so why does NZ english not work>, when i look in extension manger there is only one dic installed.. uk english with au extension.. ( no sign of the nz english i had installed.. but hey its working now so ill just leave it be..)

There may be some advice in [Tutorial] Spell check and Language configuration that might be useful to you.

As a new poster you will find much useful information in the Writer FAQ, the Writer Tutorials, the up to date Writer guide and the Writer Manual. May I suggest you bookmark the pages.

Press F1 to access the Help screen and search for your problem

The chapter headings in the manual are below - search the PDF with language.

1 - Introducing Writer
2 - Setting up Writer
3 - Working with Text
4 - Formatting Pages
5 - Printing, Exporting, Faxing and E-Mailing
6 - Introduction to Styles
7 - Working with Styles
8 - Working with Graphics
9 - Working with Tables
10 - Working with Templates
11 - Using Mail Merge
12 - Tables of Contents, Indexes and Bibliographies
13 - Working with Master Documents
14 - Working with Fields
15 - Using Forms in Writer
16 - Customizing Writer – Keyboard shortcuts.

When a pop-up window opens, click the Help button for extensive help on that function - it is often more comprehensive than the manual.

thanks... i have read through those as much as I can understand.. but still have not found the fix.

currently while I live in a country out side of the UK, I choose to use UK English as my western language in spell checker, but despite having set this as my default, and reseting my OO profile, the spell checker periodically stops working and when I go to Tools>Options> Language> Western : English UK default has always been replaced by "English" @ my locality. I reset it to English UK default and immediately the spell checkers starts working again.. until the next time the cycle repeats... usually after I have closed and re opened spell checker but other times just randomly....

What is the default language for your locale as set/detected by Windows? As you are using Windows 10, I don't know where you would go to determine that.
I seem to recall similar posts that were resolved by having Windows detect or force Windows to use a language other than that which was auto-detected.

When you did your installation, did you download and install the English (British) version or English (US)? I was unable to locate a version for English (NZ), though the NZ dictionary option might be included in one, if not both, of those main installation packages.

Pasted text will often maintain the language of the original from which the text was copied/pasted. My locale is set to English (Eire), my default language is set to English(UK), and is stable at these settings, apart from Paste or Insertion of Internet files, which maintain their original language.

The English (UK) and the English (USA) versions of AOO have the same English dictionary extension. That extension has dictionaries for English (Australia), English (Canada), English (South Africa), English (UK) and English (USA), so those are the only variants of English that SpellCheck will check if no other dictionary is installed by the user.

Windows has an input language setting which Writer will detect and apply to text which is typed in Writer. If the input language is set to English (NZ), then the English (NZ) setting will be applied to the text and SpellCheck won't work. If you want to SpellCheck using the English (UK) dictionary, then you have to change the input language setting in Windows to English (UK).
