[Issue] Problem with https:// images
[Issue] Problem with https:// images
hey there friends.
There is a problem here with the drag and drop web content on write with images.
They arent getting loading into write, just empty object.
For some reasson that i dont know if i change the url location of the images that are commonly https://, to http://, they are inmediatly loaded.
I tried these days a portable version of libreoffice where with it the images are just loaded and embed autmatically into the document.
Do you know guys what kind of issue is happening in my AOO ?
thx in advance

Re: Problem with https:// images
ALWAYS download and optimize the pictures before you insert (embed) them into an ODF document. Do not use the drag&drop method for the internet content! There is a problem here with the drag and drop web content on write with images.

Re: Problem with https:// images
i know all that is required to know about images. And the function to embed images into document, neither works when the graphic objects didnt load the images. I have to repeat that with libreoffice portable the images are loaded if http or https in their url, and also they get automatically embed into document. So i dont know but should exist a problem in AOO.... or ?

I am in that case surprised you are asking questions.arfgh wrote:i know all that is required to know about images.

If you need further advice give some web page addresses and the images on them causing problems describing
a) how you copy them,
b) how you insert them,
c) what result you get, and
d) what result you expect.

You may want the experts around here to help you find out what is happening. If you do, start by answering the four questions John_Ha asked above. While there are people with lots of experience in most aspects of OpenOffice use, we do not have a lot of clairvoyant helpers.
Most of us find it more rewarding to help people who make an effort to contribute to the solution. If we are left in the dark, we sometimes go elsewhere...

Re: Problem with https:// images
I can't reproduce the problem as described. Drag and drop doesn't work for me in either AOO or LO. Copy and paste works in LO but not in AOO. The problem may be related to this issue:
Issue 126000 - HTTPS does not work

Dragging images from various web sites into Writer works fine for me. It is not recommended because of the many reasons given in the tutorial.

Re: [Issue] Problem with https:// images
The problem I was having duplicating the problem seems to be related to Firefox. After switching to Chromium, drag and drop now works in LO, but still doesn't work in AOO.

I use Firefox 64.0.2 and successfully dragged images with it, from both http:/ and https:/ locations, and into AOO 4.1.6 Writer under W7.
Also, doing Comment 1 in the bug report works fine for me.

Re: [Issue] Problem with https:// images
I'm also using Firefox 64.0.2 but on Manjaro. Dragging an image from the Internet to AOO Writer 4.1.6 displays HTML code in Writer instead of the image. Using copy and paste to copy an image on the Internet and paste it in Writer works on some sites but not others. Oddly this forum is one site where copy and paste doesn't work. AOO Writer displays a placeholder box with the link in the box. The image itself is never displayed by AOO Writer. Changing https to http in the link doesn't help. If I close AOO Writer and open the document in LO Writer, the images are loaded and displayed.
This is probably the bug report relevant to what I'm seeing happen in Manjaro:
Issue 62995 - drag and drop of images from web browser inconsistent

That is strange. Both dragging and copy/paste from this forum work fine for me. I used the forum header image on this page while I was writing this reply.
Item 7. in the bug report works fine for me too.
A thought. Start FF with Add-ons disabled (Help > Restart with Add-ons Disabled). Does it now work?7. click on the telephone symbol on web page and drag and drop to OOo WRITER document
expected: image should appear in OOo document
actual: nothing happens
I assume the black surround is transparent on the web page.

Re: [Issue] Problem with https:// images
Might it be that the problem is connected to whether pictures are on sites that require login?
It is conceivable that LO hooks into Chrome/Chromium authentication, while AOO does not handle authentication situations.
If the site allows http "fallback", and the resources (pictures) are available also when you are not logged in, it makes some sense that http works when https doesn't.

Both drag and copy/paste still work fine for me when I log off this site. I'm betting on a browser configuration problem.
In fact, I have just tested Chrome: copy/paste from Chrome works but dragging from Chrome gives me the web address.
That strongly suggest the problem lies in the browser.
This is a document with the first image dragged OK from Firefox. The second (identical) image failed when dragged from Chrome.
The relevant content.xml is:
This is the file.
If I compare what seem to be the relevant lines we have

is probably the cause.
The Chrome "image" appears to be linked. If I go Edit > Links ..., and break the link, the message is replaced by Read Error, showing a missing image.

Re: [Issue] Problem with https:// images
More debugging.
I attempted to add a linked image by Insert > Picture > From file ..., and pasting
into the File name window. It did not come in.
When I had Chrome open (FF is my default) I got a Windows Security pop-up as below. I guessed it was for logging on to the forum so entered my username and password but it rejected it and popped up again. When I had FF open I did not get the window. In neither case did the image appear. Nor did it come in when I tried to embed it.
I then tried from an http:/ site (I used http://www.bielefeldundbuss.de) and the image appeared when I linked and when I embedded it.
So it seems to be browser dependent for dragging. In AOO itself, it is OK on an http sites but fails on https sites.

Re: [Issue] Problem with https:// images
The image on the forum web page is coded as this:
There is another anomaly.
The dragged PNG image is stored in the .odt file as a BMP image and whereas the original PNG image is a mere 10.7kBytes, the stored BMP is over 10x larger at 139 kBytes.
As expected it is far worse with photos.
When I go to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golden_Ga ... ge-001.jpg and drag the image of the bridge to Writer it too is stored as a BMP. Whereas the original 3,264 x 2,448 JPG is 2.96 MBytes the stored BMP is 11x larger at 32 MBytes. As a BMP of a photo compresses poorly, the .odt file is 15.8 MBytes.
This is one of the many reasons why dragging or copy/pasting an image from the web is not recommended - see Item 13 in [Tutorial] Some useful hints on using images for a discussion.
