Find and Replace the Little "o"s

Post by emeth »

Microsoft Word 2010 has a neat fix for the little "o"s that are in a downloaded HTML page, (like Wikipedia).

The fix is <Home> <Replace> Dialog Box <Find What> "^s" <Replace With> "^p", (without the ")

This eliminates all of those "o"s

Does OO have this capability?

It would sure help greatly.

I'm not sure what the 'little o' you refer to is, but - have you tried copying it into the F+R dialogue?

Note that OpenOffice does support regular expressions in the F+R - open the dialogue, click on More Options and select Regular expressions.

Please upload an ODF type sample file here containing that "little o" thing. ( Is that a character, or a picture? )

A .docx file is attached but may need to be looked at in MS Word.

Never use the foreign, non-standardized or half-standardized fileformats.

You can open it with AOO; but you can not save the changes into .doxc format.

Or you can try the LibreOffice. It has a littlebit higher compatibility with the foreign file formats.
Always store your important documents into the International Standard ODF file formats. You can export a copy into various file formats after you finished the editing.

I can see little "o" characters in the text body only.

Yes, there are non braking spaces, with a little dot middle of the gray "character". The dot will be appeared when you switch on the visibility of the nonprinting characters.

Do you want to replace those space characters, or the real "o" characters from the text??

Attached is a .jpg that shows grey bars in OO which is the equivalent of the "o"s in MS Word.

Paste using /Edit /Paste Special and select "unformatted text" from the popup, but you will lose formatting. Otherwise, take your existing file, select one gray box, Copy, Paste into Find box of /Edit /Find and Replace. In Replace box enter a single space, then press Replace All button. If that doesn't work you may need to drop More Options on the F&R window and deselect "Regular expressions" and try again.

If you want to get rid of non-breaking spaces and to replace them with ordinary spaces use Find & Replace. To get a non-breaking space into the 'Search for:' copy/paste one from the text. Enter an ordinary space into 'Replace with:' and click 'Replace All'. Then save as odt file.

This works in AOO and in LibO as well. With recent LibO you can also save to docx. NOT RECOMMENDED!

I cannot upload the result in docx LibO generated from the sample file because it got the ridiculous size of nearly 6 MiB though looking fine.

Incidentally, these gray spaces do not print. If you find them obtrusive onscreen, toggle /View /File shadings (and possibly also /View /Non printing characters).

Yes, I see that this will work.

A little amount of simplfication (for the user, not for the program) is to enter \s into the 'Search for:' and to enable RegEx. It will find any "whitespace" character whether breaking or not, whether wide or normal or small, and also tabulator steps an hard linebreaks. This may be similar to the way to do it in MS Word that originally was described in the question where the caret probably signals a control character as it was in DOS times. NOT RECOMMENDED!
