Problem opening and saving files with 4.1.6 on Mac???

See 4.1.6 Cannot open .xls where it is reported that spreadsheet files cannot be opened with 4.1.6 on Mac, and where a file cannot be saved as .xls.

Test with these three files.

I can open all three files.
I can save the xlsx file as xls and ods,
