Formula Crash

Post by bidu »

Hey guys, I'm having a problem where whenever I insert a formula into a word document OpenOffice crashes shortly afterword. If I save immediately after I insert the formula it will successfully recover the entire document but it is annoying to restart OO every time I need to insert a formula. I also experience similar crashes with inserting tables and other objects, but not as frequently. I'm running OO 4.11 on windows 7. Any help would be appreciated.

Greetings and welcome to the community forum!

The usual approach anytime OO suddenly starts acting strange is to get a fresh OO settings profile. This just means exiting OO, renaming (or removing) the folder where OO stores all its settings, then restarting OO--it will then create a new settings profile folder.

For details, see: [Tutorial] The OOo user profile

I don't see what the profile might have to do with inserting a formula but it's worth a try perhaps.

I tried resetting the use profile per your advice but I'm still experiencing the same crashes after inserting formulas.

Hmm ... Does the same thing happen if you insert a formula in a new document?

Ok, so then the question is, is it something specific to your computer, or does it happen with OO on any computer.

Can you check that? Or maybe you can tell us the steps you follow to see the crash and someone else running OO on Win7 can test it.

I'm not seeing a problem with OO on Linux: F2 ... sum 1|2 Enter --> 3

I'm having the same problem - AOO 4.1.5 and Windows 10.

After inserting a formula into .odt file (via Insert -> Object -> Formula) and saving file immediately after inserting, OO crashes each one time. The file is saved automatically and recovered properly each time.

Reinstallation of OO gives no result, as well as resetting the profile.

The problem has not been present always. It started to happen after I had a total system crash last week and Win 10 had to be reinstalled. I don't know if these things have anything in common, however from that moment also other "strange" behaviours of OO started to occur (at least more frequently than earlier), namely:
- bad allocation error when saving
- "this object has already been disposed" error

It happens most often when inserting something - I insert (except formulas) mostly OODraw objects into OOWriter (via Insert -> Object -> OLE Object) and pictures into OODraw (via Ctrl+C Ctrl+V, dragging or Insert Menu).

I use OO as a teacher and researcher, so its about tens of formulas to be inserted almost each day - any help would be greatly appreciated!

It probably would help if you uploaded a small example file here. It should let us see if the problem is AOO or Windows.

There is an upload tab at the bottom of the Reply and Quote windows.

Work OK for me (Xubuntu 18.04.1); this may be a side effect of a recent Windows update. I have seen reports that this update has been reworked by Microsoft to eliminate some reported side effects ; the reconfigured update may not yet be installed on your computer. I do not use any recent version of Windows, so have no personal knowledge of this.

I did a cut and paste into a new file of the three equations with no problem. I tend to agree with Rory that this is the effects of the Windows update.

However, as a quick thought, have you reset your OpenOffice user profile? This often cures all sorts of strange behaviours.

If you are desperately in need of the equation ability immediately, there is an extension called TexMaths-0.46.oxt that will give you a LaTeX math editor that seems to function well, at least for the few tests I have given it and the results seem comparable the AOO's math editor. It is both point & click or text based, (i.e. you can write \pi for π).

I did a reset of Profile at the beginning - it did not help. Windows claims it is up to date with everything.
Strange thing - the problem suddenly disappeared. This morning Writer crashed as it repetitively did during last week and now (in the afternoon) everything is fine. After computer restart it still works properly. I did nothing with AOO and - concerning the system - there were only few installations (as almost every day after the system collapce last week) which seem to have nothing to do with AOO (MikTeX, TeXStudio and some security certificates). Anyway thank you for attention and time spent on this issue.

TexMaths looks very nice! Haven't heard of it earlier!

This solution is probably due to the replacement faulty Windows 10 upgrade having autoinstalled on your computer. I have heard suggestions that Microsoft issued an ammended update, which is being pushed out to replace the earlier (faulty) one.

The problem returned in a day time, yet I had no time to sit and deal with it. Now I've done some tests and here are my conclusions.

It seems that the problem concernes OOFormula, as inserting other objects makes not so many troubles. Creation of new file in OOFormula works correctly. Input is correct. Saving look's fine. However, after saving, when I close OOFormula window, error and recovery windows pops up: "Due to unknown error a crash of OO occurs. All files will be saved. During next start up of OO files will be automatiaclly recovered. Following files will be recovered:" (my approximate translation from Polish). However, there is nothing in the recovery list below. The files are anyway saved correctly (the crash happens when closing OOFormula, after saving) however at next start up (an automatic one) no attempt of recovering anything is made. The files are fine, yet when I open this .odf file, then do nothing and close it, the same error crashes OO and the rest looks the same.

There are no problems with inserting Formulas into OOImpress and OODraw - at least in general, as some crashes happen from time to time. Inserting formulas into Writer and Calc files crashes OO only when it is done via Insert -> Object -> Formula or Insert -> Object OLE Object -> Formula. Insertig it as an OLE object from existing file makes no trouble. It seems to me that it is due to fact, that inserting a new formula "opens OOFormula inside OOWriter/Calc" (I belive you know what I mean) and then it must be closed (inside e.g. Writer) - this perhaps makes something wrong in Writer/Calc file, since closing OOFormula alone crashes OO).

Resetting user profile as well as reinstallation of OO makes no help.

My test files are in the attachement.

I'm aware that the problem may concern particularly my system, anyway any suggestions what i could do about it would be helpful. Is it possible that it is a bug that results in incompatibility with Windows in case of specific system setings?
