Writer Crashes after inserting a formula....

Post by DyanaRoseJill »

So I've just encountered this new problem. To my knowledge, I haven't had any significant updates since this problem started.

I'm running version 4.1.4 on Windows 10.

I insert a formula into the document, and then press the save button and the program crashes. When I recover the saved file, the formula that I had just inserted before the program crashed is recovered.

I'm attaching the file, for what it's worth. Enjoy reading a worksheet about set theory. The problematic formulas are on the second page.

If you need more information, I'm happy to provide it, but I'm a bit of a n00b, so it's entirely possible that I'll also need instructions on how to find the information that you need.

This would, of course, happen to me at the start of a new school year. (I'm a math teacher)

Try renaming your user profile. Shutdown OpenOffice. Open any folder and in the address bar near the top enter
%appdata%\openoffice\4
That will take you to a folder containing a folder named user. Right click on it and rename it user_old. Restart OpenOffice and try inserting a formula. You should get the registration screen when you start OpenOffice.

Hi

I tried as you suggested, but that didn't fix in the problem. Instead, now the program also hangs on the "recovering document" screen. It will complete, but it doesn't relaunch Writer

If your OO is hanging on opening try starting TaskManager (Ctrl Shift Esc) and kill any soffice processes shown on TM's tabs. Note soffice, with an initial "s".

So actually, it appears that the problem is that Writer crashes after inserting an object - not just a formula.

Further updating: It seems that editing an already existing formula is also enough to crash the program. Is this just some bizzare problem specific to me? I've tried renaming the user file twice now and it hasn't fixed the problem.

Kinda bummed that this problem is unsolvable.

Try allowing Windows 10 update - there have been problems arising from a recent update and reports that a revision of this might fix these problems.

As I suggested in another thread:
If you are desperately in need of the equation ability immediately, there is an extension called TexMaths-0.46.oxt that will give you a LaTeX math editor that seems to function well, at least for the few tests I have given it and the results seem comparable the AOO's math editor. It is both point & click or text based, (i.e. you can write \pi for π).
It sounds like you are "desperate". If you are familiar with LaTeX it seems pretty easy to use. If not, it probably will take a day or so of practice but it gives good results.

BTW, you are inserting a lot of line returns (↵) where I think you mean to have paragraph returns (¶).

I can confirm this behaviour.

Recovery seems to save the file. Additions to the file that don't include formulas are fine, but any changes to a formula result in a crash on saving.

I encounter the same problem, but have a Workaround for those in need:

type your equations outside the editor: I = sum from {i =0} to N m _i r_i^2
then highlight and click the formula. If you need to edit: hit "undo" and edit the text. I normally keep the original plain-text around.

Not a solution, but a workaround.

As to the suggestions: I tried updating user, deleted OO, reinstalled, etc. Nothing has worked. It gets annoying.
I use OO on Win7 on my desktop, but I don't carry my desktop PC with me.
It seems it is a Win10 issue.

I have made the switch to libre office.

Is Open office in active development anymore? This is a pretty big show-stopper.

Version 4.1.6 is about to be released (RC1 can be tested, see the Annoucement section of this forum).
Is there any bug report for that? See: [Tutorial] Reporting bugs or suggestions.

I don't know if there is a bug report. Where is the bug-report tool and I will have a look.

Thanks

It is actually linked from the topic that Hagar linked in his post above; to save you clicking on his link I'll put it here.

I am having the same problem, it's extremely frustrating.

I have tried using libre office instead but I find it very sluggish and is often non-responsive.

I also switched to LibreOffice. It is slow on start-up, has a few "to get used to items" that I don't like, but at least it doesn't crash

Has anyone found a solution to this problem? Otherwise, I will be installing LibreOffice too.
