[Solved] Over-written menu responses
I got a cheap Dell from Amazon and installed Linux Mint 19 on it. That left me with LibreOffice. Since I'm used to OpenOffice, I tried (unsuccessfully) to install it. Finally, I got LibreOffice purged and Open Office installed. The problem I'm having is with the top menu bar and the table controls. Simply put, they over-write themselves. If a paragraph is in first-line indent, the menu reports "first-line indent" printed over the word "default". If I set 14 point, 12 point appears in the box as well. If I change the dimensions of a text box to be centered, for instance, .25 from the left margin, whatever was in that box is still there, although the indent does work.
(Hope I did that right) Any suggestions?

Re: Over-written menu responses
If you're using MInt Cinnamon, try Mint MATE. I saw this on Manjaro Cinnamon and switched to Manjaro MATE to work around the problem.

Re: Over-written menu responses
In order to switch to MATE, do I have to trash everything and start anew? Or is there a way to preserve the customizations I've already done?

You should be able to install MATE on Cinnamon:

Re: Over-written menu responses
OK. Got MATE installed parallel with Cinnamon but the menu problems persist in AOO. I saw the same problems with another pgm, so I'm thinking the bug may be in LM 19?

Re: Over-written menu responses
If the problem is affecting other programs, then it may be a bug in LM.I don't use LM so I don't know about that. Have you asked about the problem on a LM forum? What other programs are affected?

Re: Over-written menu responses
I've now tried AOO 4.1.5 on LM-MATE 19 Live and LM-XFCE 19 Live and see the problem on both. I've also seen the same problem on Manjaro-Cinnamon, but I didn't see the problem on Manjaro-MATE and don't see it on Ubuntu-MATE 18.04. I haven't tried any other recent Linux distribution releases.

Can you upload a screenshot (see How to attach a document here)?
You can try to change the font used at the system level, that was the fix for a similar issue in the past (if I understand correctly your problem).

Re: Over-written menu responses
This is a screen shot from AOO Writer 4.1.5 in LM-XFCE 19. The "Apply Style" drop-down menu shows both "Text body" and "Default" in the box after changing the style from Text body to Default. I did find that opening and closing another window in AOO (e.g. the Navigator) cleans up the text in the box.

Re: Over-written menu responses
Not sure I've ever seen that in the past. Happens when several words in a field (looks fine for the font list)?

Re: Over-written menu responses
The font list is fine in the screen shot because I didn't change the font. The problem affects any drop-down list or text box on the toolbars, sidebar or dialog boxes.
Edit: Just to clarify, the drop-down lists and text boxes are fine when AOO is first opened. The problem only occurs in a drop-down list or text box after the setting displayed by the drop-down list or text box is changed.

Re: Over-written menu responses
The problem appears to be caused by a compatibility issue with the Mint-Y theme which is the default theme in Linux Mint 19. Changing the theme to Mint-X which was the default theme in Linux Mint 18 should work around the problem.
