[Solved] Spell checker "red wriggly lines"

Post by coppens1 »

OpenOffice 130418 XPSpellcheck Dict not working

Dear fellow OpenOffice users, I installed Open Office 4.1.0 on my stand alone Dell Desktop with Windows XP, with no internet access.

I tried to use John_Ha's procedure but my C: has no file
C:\Users\xxxxxx\AppData\Roaming\OpenOffice\4\user. I notice the procedure is for Windows 7. Windows 8 and Windows 10. But I have XP.

What do you suggest?

Quick and dirty, works almost every time:

Rename your OO User profile:
shutdown OpenOffice and then open any folder. In the address bar near the top enter
%appdata%\openoffice\4\
That should take you to a folder containing a folder called user. Rename that to user_old and restart OpenOffice. You should get the registration screen. This cures almost all spellcheck problems.

Thank you, RoryOF. Sorry, I don't know what you mean by "Rename your OO User profile". Can you tell me more?

I see some other directions in your message. I will try the directions you gave me today, and let you know later. I am hampered by not having internet at home. JC

The colon after "Rename your OO User profile:" means that what follows the colon explains how to rename your user profile. Is there something in those instructions that you don't understand?

RoryOFSun 160418 Did not work

Dear RoryOFSun, thanks for your help so far! I followed the directions, it didn't work. When I reopened OpenOffice, I got the following error message:

Error loading BASIC of document file:///C:/Documents%20and%20Settings/admin/Application%20Data/OpenOffice/4/user/basic/script.xlc/:

General Error
General input/output error.

Remember that I have Open Office 4.1.0, which was installed manually, not downloaded from the website.
What else can we try?

Hagar Delest RoryOFSun 170418 Problem Solved

Dear Rory and Hagar, because of user accounts, etc., I had to do the 'user_old' routine several times, and click the error messages, but it all appears to be working now.

thanks for your help. JC
