Dissatisfaction

Post by Eamonn Elliott »

Hello,
I am not at all happy. Due to not being able to open "Openoffice" today cost me a Days work.
If you are providing a product could you please insure that it works. I realise that they may be bugs but your incompetence is in excusable.

We are Users, like you, providing help in our own time.

The usual reason for OpenOffice not opening is either a system crash (which is not within anyone's control) or improper shut down or hibernation of the computer before internal housekeeping and software/hardware write buffers have flushed to disk - this is within User control. Such improper shut down (however arising) leaves orphan OpenOffice processes running, which prevent it starting up correctly.

Sometimes a restart of the computer is sufficient to cure such a problem. If not, the cure is to start Task Manager (Ctrl shift Esc) and kill any "soffice" or "openoffice" processes (omit quotes) shown on TM's Processes or Details tab.

Did you try the fixes suggested in Rory's last paragraph?

If you are not guilty of any of the above than it sounds like you did not try Rory's suggestion of using Task Manager to kill any soffice or OpenOffice process listed. Did you try this? Did you restart you computer?

May I offer refund?

By the way: There's a company I just don't remember the name of making billions of some currency every year with software that doesn't work correctly. They also tend to implicitly claim, ownership of my computer and have started to waste hours of my time for keeping my system running under bombardment with updates every few days.

You do need to do a little maths. AOO has been downloaded by some 200,000,000 people. You say it does not work for you.

Do you think the problem lies with the AOO software the other 199,999,999 people find is OK? Or do you think that, just possibly, the problem might lie with your understanding (or lack of understanding), your installation, your unique PC configuration and/or your way of working?

We are here to try and help, not to waste our time listening to your complaints. Please read Survival Guide for the forum

Oh you are a very Helpful lot I see. Are you all in training to work for Microsoft? You must be nearly ready to graduate with their equivalent to customer abuse/ care.

If you have a problem related to the usage of the AOO or LO, please describe it. Give us precise details, attache some ODF type sample documents if it is necessary.
Then we will able help you.

Do not forget it: We are not developers. We are users as you are.

Please, edit the initial post in the topic: add the word [Solved] at the beginning of the subject line - if your problem has been solved.

That someone might post nonsense of the kind in a forum like this one should not be expected - but is reality. Being not quite in the mood to just laugh about and quit the thread, I remembered a few texts by Paul Lutus, one published (edited version probably) in 2003.
Time went by since. Nonetheless some visitor here may want to read.

That is an excellent analysis of the problem. I did like

Elliott,

I've seen your reports about 2 posts of this topic. You talk about rudeness and insults to the software user, also saying that we were paid for that (in uppercase).
When I look at your first post in the forum, quoted above for the record, I see someone barking and being quite rude (incompetence is in excusable).
But despite your lack of courtesy, you've still been given helpful advices. You're not the first angered user to introduce himself with a rant, so we have developed a thick skin.
Even if you've taken the "improper shut down or hibernation [...] is within User control" as an attack, it was not.
However, you continued with your lack of courtesy (I quote you: "You must be nearly ready to graduate with their equivalent to customer abuse"), accusing of rudeness those who try to help.

Honestly, do you think that if the software had been so poor the forum wouldn't be full of rants like yours?
If you don't want to admit that there is an issue linked to your configuration, then we can't do anything for you.

I think that you've made perfectly clear that you were dissatisfied with AOO. If you have felt better afterward, then, great, we have been helpful in a way. But now if you want to go ahead, either keep cool and just tell about the hints that have been given to you. Or use something else and leave, that would be understandable.

I don't intend to lock this topic but I'm not sure there is any point continuing this discussion.
