Need Help with OpenOffice working on a Mac

Hello. My current MacBook Pro is a Mid 2009. my current OS X is El Capitan 10.11.6. My current version of OpenOffice is 3.3.0 . I can open OpenOffice and select a command but when I start to type it freezes up and I have to do a force quite. Can anyone help me.

If that doesn't help, perhaps you could elaborate on exactly what you mean by"select a command but when I start to type it freezes".
