[Solved] Crash while saving doc
[Solved] Crash while saving doc
Using 4.1.4 version, can't save documents. Open Office crashes every time. Have reinstalled 4.1.4 version multiple times to no effect. Was working 2 days ago.
Help would be appreciated.

Re: Crash while saving doc.
Try resetting your user profile. Shutdown Openoffice then open any folder and type
%appdata%\openoffice\4
in the address bar at the top. That should take you to a folder containing a folder named user. Rename that to user_old then restart OpenOffice. You should get the registration dialog. Is the crashing gone.

Re: Crash while saving doc.
See this post; if the suggested fix there does not resolve the problem, try restarting Windows in Safe Mode and see if the problem then goes away.

Re: Crash while saving doc.
Try saving this file. If it saves OK there is something wrong with your file(s).
See [Tutorial] Differences between Writer and MS Word files for why you should always work in and save files as .odt.

Re: Crash while saving doc.
So it is unlikely to be the document causing the crash.nrubin wrote:Tried that same result. Thanks anyway.
1. Reboot. If that does not fix it, then
2. As RoryOF says, strange problems are sometimes fixed by resetting the profile - see Resetting the user profile.
3. If that doesn't fix it, then completely uninstall AOO (making sure that you rename C:\Users\xxxxx\AppData\Roaming\OpenOffice\4\user to C:\Users\xxxxx\AppData\Roaming\OpenOffice\4\user_OLD so as to delete your old profile. Download AOO from http://www.openoffice.org/download/index.html and re-install.

Re: Crash while saving doc.
Is AOO actually crashing or are you getting an error message when trying to save a document?
AOO 4.1.14 on Ubuntu MATE 22.04
Re: Crash while saving doc.
With OpenOffice closed, start TaskManager (Ctrl shift Esc)( and kill any soffice or openoffice processes shown on TM's Processes tab (Details tab on some later Windows versions). Then close TaskManager and see if OO saves files correctly.
Apache OpenOffice 4.1.15 on Xubuntu 22.04.4 LTS
Re: Crash while saving doc.
Both crashing when trying to save document as well as a message saying OO crashed.Bill wrote:Is AOO actually crashing or are you getting an error message when trying to save a document?

Same results. With no processes OO closes. Opening Office and trying again same results. thanks.RoryOF wrote:With OpenOffice closed, start TaskManager (Ctrl shift Esc)( and kill any soffice or openoffice processes shown on TM's Processes tab (Details tab on some later Windows versions). Re: Crash while saving doc.
Have done that several times. It definitely is not the document since any new or old document creates same result.John_Ha wrote:So it is unlikely to be the document causing the crash.nrubin wrote:Tried that same result. Thanks anyway.

Re: Crash while saving doc.
Please post a screen shot of the message or an exact quote. Error messages aren't always that vague and sometimes provide vital clues. A Google search for "OO crashed" finds many images of airplane crashes, but nothing about Apache OpenOffice.nrubin wrote:Both crashing when trying to save document as well as a message saying OO crashed.Bill wrote:Is AOO actually crashing or are you getting an error message when trying to save a document?

Re: Crash while saving doc.
As Bill says we need
1. The exact sequence of what you are doing to cause the crash (eg I am editing an existing .doc file. I go File > Save As ..., and click Save. OR I click the Save icon. Writer then ?????????, and shows this error message)
Note: Crash = Writer disappears completely and you get back to Windows. Hang = Writer stops responding and will not react when you try to do something.
2. The exact words of the error message or messages you get, or a screen image of the message where the words can be read.

Re: Crash while saving doc.
Discovered that the computer login profile of the main user was corrupted which caused the problem with the OO software not functioning properly. Logging on with a different user on the computer, the OO software worked fine. Had to rebuild the main user's profile. Thank you to all who responded. Happy Holidays.

Re: Crash while saving doc.
We have had several recent posts where rebuilding the Windows user profile fixed it. I think all have been Windows 10.nrubin wrote:Discovered that the computer login profile of the main user was corrupted which caused the problem with the OO software not functioning properly.
For those searching how did you rebuild the profile? Did you
1. Save the user's data by renaming C:\Users\Fred to C:\Users\Fred_OLD
2. Delete user Fred
3. Create a new user Fred
4. Copy back the data.
As your problem is solved please view your first post in this thread and click the Edit button (top right in the post) and add [Solved] in front of the subject.

Re: [Solved]-Crash while saving doc.
Tried a new user without changing the original user to determine that the software was working. Then just reestablished a second version of the original user and deleting the original user profile.
