Unlocking ODT files

Post by telad »

I have inadvertently locked my .ODT files, and want to unlock them all. There must be a simple command that will allow me to do this.
YES, this is my computer and my files. I run WIN8 with OO 4.1.3

Thank you for responding in BEGINNERS terminology.

Are you getting the "This file is locked by another user" message? That can be caused by OpenOffice not shutting down correctly and leaving behind lock files that are normally deleted when a file is closed. These files are normally hidden. Here is an explanation of how to show hidden files that I copied from a Microsoft help page
Windows 8.1

Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, then select Search (or if you're using a mouse, point to the upper-right corner of the screen, move the mouse pointer down, and then select Search).
Type folder in the search box, then select Folder Options from the search results.
Select the View tab.
Under Advanced settings, select Show hidden files, folders, and drives, and then select OK.
Once you can see hidden files, shutdown OpenOffice, go to the folder that contains your OpenOffice files and look for files whose name starts with .~lock. Delete these files and your problem should be solved. If lock files continue to persist after files are closed, we will have to look into why OpenOffice isn't shutting down correctly.

You get a Zen-like sense of whimsical peacefulness if you convert Windows error messages into haiku ...
Windows error messages rewritten as Haiku

A file that big?
It might be very useful.
But now it is gone.

Yesterday it worked.
Today it is not working.
Windows is like that.

Stay the patient course
Of little worth is your ire.
The network is down.

Three things are certain:
Death, taxes, and lost data.
Guess which has occurred.

You step in the stream,
but the water has moved on.
This page is not here.

Out of memory.
We wish to hold the whole sky,
But we never will.

Having been erased,
The document you're seeking
Must now be retyped.

Rather than a beep
Or a rude error message,
These words: “File not found.”

Serious error.
All shortcuts have disappeared.
Screen. Mind. Both are blank.

The Web site you seek
cannot be located but
endless others exist.

Chaos reigns within.
Reflect, repent, and reboot.
Order shall return.

ABORTED effort:
Close all that you have.
You ask way too much.

First snow, then silence.
This thousand dollar screen dies
so beautifully.

With searching comes loss
and the presence of absence:
“My Novel” not found.

The Tao that is seen
Is not the true Tao, until
You bring fresh toner.

Windows 7 crashed.
I am the Blue Screen of Death.
No one hears your screams.

A crash reduces
your expensive computer
to a simple stone.

Error messages
cannot completely convey.
We now know shared loss.
