Can you tell us the exact type of document you are trying to open - e.g. OpenOffice spreadsheet, Excel spreadsheet, something else - and describe exactly how you are trying to open it and what happens when you try?

Are you really using 3.1, a very old version?
Cheers

I am using openoffice 4.0.1

it would be openoffice spreadsheet.

I cannot open up anything that I have in openoffice....I just get this spinning circle when I try, then it times out.

You might have a hung OpenOffice process. Open the task manager by pressing the three keys CTRL Shift ESC simultaneously. On the Processes tab (called Details in Windows 10), look for processes called soffice and kill them. Then try OpenOffice again.

well, I hit the keys CTRL Shift ESC simultaneously and then all of a sudden, openoffice opened up & let me open up my spreadsheet.....I did not have to go thru the rest of the process, but will keep instructions in case it happens again.
