[Issue] Password protected document opens read-only

Post by dseiler389 »

I have a DOCUMENT that can only be opened with a pass word. 1. How do I change the pass word 2. How do I eliminate the 'READ ONLY' tag. I need to make changes.

Title Edited. A descriptive title for posts helps others who are searching for solutions and increases the chances of a reply (Hagar, Moderator).

The document must be opened with the password and can then be saved with a new password. If the document, before opening, is flagged as "read only", that problem needs to be sorted out before applying the password to open the file. How was this file transferred from any older computer. Are you the owner of it, with the same credentials as when it was originally saved?

This was not transferred , I am the owner and the only owner. I see no way of "sorting it out before applying password."

Enable viewing of hidden files. With OpenOffice closed, look in the directory of the file in question for a lock file of form similar to

Code: Select all

.~lock.file_name.odt#
if there are, delete them.

Note: such lock files are much smaller than the owning. Don't delete the wrong file.

I see nothing about what you are talking about. I think I do not have the knowledge to follow you. Mine is limited. Sorry.

After opening the file, Save As and uncheck the password option at the bottom of the dialog.
If that new file is still read-only, there may be a problem with the rights granted to the file & folder.

Please add [Solved] at the beginning of the title in your first post (top of the topic) with the edit button if your issue has been fixed.

What is the document format? If I recall correctly, there is a bug that causes password protected documents saved in the Word .doc format to open read-only by enclosing the document content in a protected section. You may have to click the "Edit file" icon on the Toolbar and/or edit the section properties to remove the protection.
