Formula fields do not show results

Post by ocobri »

How can I make formula results appear in the cell instead of the formula itself? I have tried googling, but the answers I have found do not correspond to the menu options I have in version 4.1.2.

Greetings and welcome to the community forum!

Tools > Options ... does not exist on OO/Mac. Options are instead located on the desktop menu. OO/Mac Preferences

In Preferences > OpenOffice Calc > View, I checked and unchecked "Display Formula" but nothing changed in the highlighted cells, or anywhere.

Did the formulas ever work?

Check the cell format: Format > Cells > Numbers ... Is the format category set to text?

It is a Concatenate formula with text results, so I have tried Text but also Numbers. I have never seen the formula work.

The quickest solution will come if you upload a small sample file.

Changing the cell format does NOT change what's stored in the cell.

However, the format can change how Calc interprets what you enter. If the cell format was set to text when the formula was entered, the entry will be taken as text instead of a working formula. Once the formula is stored as text, Calc will not change it if you later change the cell format.

Set the cell format to Number > General (the default format) THEN edit the formula (add a space at the end and delete it). When you finish editing and press Enter, Calc will now re-interpret the entry and it should take it as a working formula.
