[Solved] Fatal Error "index out of bounds" when open docs
[Solved] Fatal Error "index out of bounds" when open docs
Everytime I try to open a writer document, OO crashes with a Fatal Error "index out of bounds". This also seems to happen when I scroll to the bottom of a completely new document.
Also, something about the interface seem to be broken (see attachment), I see some fields with cryptic characters (I am using a german language pack), but that happened long before it started to crash.
I tried reinstalling OO after deleting the whole folder "user/library/Application Support/OpenOffice", but it does not help.
Any suggestions?

As mentioned above, I deleted the complete OpenOffice folder in "user/library/Application Support" where the user folder exists (I had no profile settings I needed to keep), but it didn't help.floris v wrote:Reset your user profile. Click here for help how to do that.

Sorry, I thought that was the program folder, not on a Mac myself.

I am getting this too. I renamed my 'User' profile and it worked fine... for a few days. Now the issue is back and renaming User does not work any more. I have 4.1.2 running on a 2009 iMac with OSX V10.11.5. I am opening small (30k) odg files with a fair amount of drawing content.

I've just sent a mail on the dev mailing list, we will see if someone has an idea at least to put us on the right path: Index out of bounds (on the dev mailing list with Mail Archive).

First, could you provide this document so that we can test it?data_me wrote:Everytime I try to open a writer document
Second, did you increase cache memory resources into Tools > Options menu?data_me wrote:This also seems to happen when I scroll to the bottom of a completely new document.

Note that, on a Mac, Options is under Preferences.

Re: Fatal Error "index out of bounds" when open docs [OO 4.1
Hello,
I would like to report the same problem (i.e. fatal error with crash 'index out of bounds'), but for me it doesn't have any connection to the images or anything. It crashes just every time after some seconds.
I tried reseting the profile, reinstalling Openoffice, renaming the "extension.db" and making the cache bigger (even if it seems for me totally irrelevant, due to no images in my documents...)
I would be grateful for help and solving the problem, for now OpenOffice is totally down for me, impossible to work on...

I have the same problem. I had it now with several different documents over the last days.
I followed these steps to try to fix the problem.
1) Updated from Oo 4.1.2 to 4.1.3
Same problem
2) renamed user folder in /Users/[my_user]/Library/Application Support/OpenOffice, restarted OpenOffice
Same problem.
3) deleted Open Office. Deleted new User folder in /Users/[my_user]/Library/Application Support/OpenOffice. Deleted Oo preference file in /Users/[my_user]/Library/Preferences. Reinstalled OpenOffice 4.1.3 from a new download.
Same problem
4) Deleted Java and Java legacy. Reinstalled them from new downloads. Opened OpenOffice, navigated to Preferences/Java, "Use a Java Runtime Environment" is Checked, and selected the java legacy library in the window below.
Same problem.
5) Increased OpenOffice memory and image caches.
Same problem
6) Uninstalled OpenOffice as in step 3 above. Reinstalled OpenOffice 3.4.1
Fixed! Currently running for 24 hours without a "index out of bounds" crash
My conclusion is that there is a problem with Open Office 4.1 on MacOsX Sierra in some configurations.
Please let me know if I can post any other info to help solve this problem.

sorry for the slow update to this thread, but I was wrong above, unfortunately. The 3.4.1 installation crashes too. I am back to 4.1.3 and I am still getting frequent crashes. It's really an unfortunate situation.
I will try to fill out a bug report soon

I'm experiencing this on Mac OS Sierra and OpenOffice 4.1.3, too. Seems to have happened either after I added a new user to my system or after I changed file permissions. Could be unrelated, though.

I've been seeing this problem for more than six months now. Have finally given up on OpenOffice. Hate to say it, but as bloated as Windblows Office 2007 is, at least it doesn't crash every time I use it.

I had the same issue but luckily I found a SOLUTION that worked for me. I tried several versions of the software and also resetting my profile on each attempt, but to no use.
The solution was to quit the mac app Magnet which helps you resize windows on your desktop. I have emailed them regarding the issue.

Re: Fatal Error "index out of bounds" when open docs [OO 4.1
I had the same problems for the last 6-8 month and was about to give up on OO on Mac.
Getting "index out of bounds" error and crash when:
- clicking on a grey empty area next to the page
- clicking on the last page of a document into an area where the there was no (filled or empty) text line.
- using the mac osx mission control ('show all windows') and then switch to OO
I tried a lot of uninstalling and re-installing nothing worked .
But Hanso's tip nailed it
The moment I turned off the magnet app OO worked fine and there were no more crashes
So for any mac user experiencing this problem - check on potential software conflicts with magnet app (or similar apps)

Re: [Solved] Fatal Error "index out of bounds" when open doc
I just had the same issue, and had to deactivate BetterTouchTools which has similar functionalities than Magnet. That would tend to indicate that the issue comes from OpenOffice, if two different apps with similar features cause the same crash?

I had the same problem, and upon reading your posts I realized I have a similar app, RightZoom. It allows you to exclude specific apps, so I added OpenOffice to my list of exclusions, and lo and behold, I can now do no wrong in OpenOffice Writer. I can drop in images, click in gray space, etc. and not get an error.
The problem is definitely with OO.

Thanks guys.
BTT and Magnet caused issues for me. All good now.
Any idea which windows manager does NOT crash OO. Anyone tried SizeUp?

Hanso, great call!! Indeed turning off magnet solved it for me also. Hopefully the folks at magnet will figure out the conflict, and create a fix. Whatever it is probably affects apps other than OpenOffice. Thanks again !!!

These software products may be incomptaible with OpenOffice. If you want to use OpenOffice, you can remove the one you've installed and undo the changes to your Mac (especially Accessibility settings in System Preferences) which you performed during its installation.

Re: [Solved] Fatal Error "index out of bounds" when open doc
I found that Deskovery3 also create an index out of bounds error and the the program fails. The common thread seems to be applications on the Mac Mojave (and maybe earlier versions) that manage windows create the fault?

To do this, bring an OpenOffice window into focus (i.e. it should say OpenOffice in the upper left hand corner of the menu bar), then click on the Magnet tray icon, and select 'Ignore "Open Office"'.Rhythmattic wrote:THIS !!!!!

Deskovery 3 was definately the problem. Seems any program that offers to control windows kills OO's window sizing operations.
