.xls ss will not run under anything but Excel

Post by Cambirder »

I will shortly be starting a course that I am required to use an Excel based modeling tool that unfortunately won't run under anything other than Excel (I've tried on every OS ss I know of including OOO 3). This is a bit of a pain as I don't have, and don't want Excel. The problem document is the CASS tool that can be found at the following site.

http://www.steverox.info/software_downloads.htm

The issue seems to be with the macro associated with the "Run" button, and unfortunately my macro skills are zero. Can anyone advise if this ss is easily fixable, or am I going to have to borrow a pc with Excel on it for a couple of weeks?

As I thought, the macros are protected by a password and therefore it is not possible to assess the complexity. Unles you could obtain it from the owner of the program, the solution to borrow a PC with Excel seems to be your only choice...

Are you sure? I can access the macros under my xubuntu box. But they seem rather complex. Rewriting them would take some time I guess.

Thanks for your replies, I think I will have to dose myself in holy water and temporally go over to the dark side

I had a bit of a delve but can't actually find any of the macros that are supposed to be linked to any of the buttons

In Excel, the macro are protected by a password. I *know* that in Calc I can see them but in my opinion it would go against the author's will to access them.

As they're given for free without any kind of license, it's worth asking him if it can be translated to OOo.

I will do that. He has also protected the sheet but without putting a password in place, so I suspect its done more to protect from accidental damage than anything else.

I assume as the protected macros can't be converted OOO just removes them, which is why I can't see them.

Well I can see some macros but don't seem to be able to anything linked to the particular button (but I could just be being a bit thick here) This is the error message I get from OOO 3.0

I can't find that module either.

When I press the Run button (with 2.4.1 under W2k), the IDE interface opens with an error due to VBA code.

But I can see all the macros it seems:

Interesting, see the same thing in 2.4.1, but its mostly missing under 3.0.

2.4.1 throws up a BASIC syntax error (Symbol expected)
