[Solved] Installation problem windows 10

Post by samlcampbell »

I have used OO for years with no problems till I "upgraded" to windows 10 and tried to reinstall OO.
When nearly at the end of installation I get the error "error occurred during registration of extensions" . Installation rolls back when the error OK box is clicked. If I do not click the error ok box but click the OO desktop icon I get the error " application failed to start because the side by side configuration is incorrect". I have tried all suggestions I can find on this website without any solution working. Can anyone help with any ideas.

idea: Revert back to Windows 7 while still in the 30 day rollback period... hoping that you haven't already exceeded that time frame.

The problem might not be fixed by going back to Windows 7. This error has occurred for a few user long before Windows 10. Use the Search box above to find old threads where this was discussed.

W7 - I am long past the return date.
Search other posts- I have searched and read and tried every suggested solution but none works.
So help still needed.
I am having to use MS Office so I want to get back to OO asap.

You may need to install a 32 bit Java on your computer. This you must download from
http://www.java.com - it will have 586 in its file name; and choose Java 7 or 8. It will run alongside a 64 bit Java. You may then, if OO installs OK, need to select this Java (once only necessary) in /Tools /Options /OpenOffice : Java so that any Java using extensions run correctly.

Thanks for that . I have checked and have both 32 and 64 bit versions. v8 update 65. Still no joy. Is there any other source of help for OO that could help?

Start Windows in Safe Mode, then run OpenOffice. If it runs stable in that mode the culprit is some program or driver that runs in Windows normal mode. What this might be is difficult to say - obvious candidates are programs such as antivirus or fire walls which touch open OpenOffice files; sometimes a running continual backup service has been reported to cause such a problem: Comodo was one such some years ago - I'm not sure if it still is.

Also any utility that touches or monitors the clipboard has been suggested as causing crashes. The most prominent of these is (was?) Skype.

I don't run Windows other than very rarely an old copy for access to 20 years of legacy files, so cannot help with personal experience, only with reports gleaned from the OO en-Forum.

Thanks again. Tried safe mode but "windows installation service not accessible in safe mode", so out of safe and uninstalled skype, disconnected from internet, closed avast, ran ccleaner, and still it wont install.

Before you try installing again, delete or rename your OpenOffice user profile. If this exists, as it does from the old OO installation, it is picked up by the new installation. Delete or rename it. As you are using Windows do this by:

Open File Explorer. Copy and paste %appdata%\OpenOffice\3 in the File Explorer Address Bar and press Enter. Delete or Rename the "user" folder. Now try to install OpenOffice. If it installs you will have to download and install any extensions you had installed previously.

This is a problem with the MS VC++2008 Redistributable installation/configuration. Right-click the Start button and select "Programs and Features". What versions of the Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable are installed? There should be at least 4 versions on 64-bit Windows 10 if you had OOo 3.3 installed and started the upgrade to AOO 4.1.1.

Thanks RoryOF. Already done that, deleted all OO when there were problems after "upgrading" to W 10, so now have nothing installed. One remaining bit somewhere, as part of the failed installation the screen with Name and Orgainisation is pre filled in, so this information must be coming from somewhere that maybe should be deleted if I knew where it was.

Thanks Bill, I have a lot of MS VC Redistributable seven in all.
2005 Redistributable
2008 x64 9.0.3
2008 x86 9.0.3
2010 x64 10.0
2010 x86 10.0
2012 x64 11.0

The versions of the MSVC++ 2008 redistributable required for AOO 4.1.1 are installed. Unfortunately, this is a problem which has proven difficult if not impossible to duplicate or solve in the past. Have you tried just restarting the computer and installing again? If that doesn't work, here is one of the more recent solutions which you can try:

WINDOWS 10 error The application has failed to start because the side by side configuration is incorrect.

Have tried repeatedly to restart and install.
Thanks for the link. So far have tried-
sfc/scannow gave - errors found , unable to fix some.

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Scanhealth gave - the component store is repairable

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth gave - error 0x800f081f source file could not be found

various references to log files which I have saved but don't have knowledge to understand them.

Next step to try from the link is repair from installation disc.
I really do appreciate your suggestions, thanks

I thought that oo 4.1.2 might have solved the problem but no such luck. Is there no way I can find out the reason and fix this problem?

I think the first thing you have to do is get the disk straightened out with sfc /scannow. Try running that in Safe Mode.

OK SFC/scannow found corrupt files but was not able to fix some. It produced a large logfile with lots of failures noted like
Failed to internally open package
Failed to OpenPackage using worker session
Extraction of file: update.ses failed because it is not present in the container
Failed to stage execution chain
Failed to process single phase execution
Failed to get inventory
etc etc , none of which I understand
I am downloading another copy of W10 to burn to disc, but not sure if this will repair the OS.

Had a look at That ten forum thread . I did nit bother with iso burning or flashdrives. Just downloaded w10 and installed it. Found it confusing how it asked about keeping apps instead of programs. Was used to xp and w7 options to install or repair so was worried about losing stuff. All I lost was a few hours as the screen told me to sit back and relax.
