Upgrading to 4.4.1 corrupted a file

Post by Surnis »

Hello,

I just updated open ofice to 4.4.1 version, (on windows 7) and everything seems fine, except one of my files didn't get the same icon as the others, and it doesn't open amymore.
When I click on it, instead of just opening like all other files, It opens a page called "text import - (CCGs.ODS)" (CCGs being the name of the file). That page offers some options like character sets and separators, and wether I click OK or cancel, it goes to a pop-up called "document in use" saying "document file CCGs.ODS os locked for editing by unknown user. i get a choice to open a read-only or an editable copy. Either only opens a virgin page with none of my work. I tried after just opening my pc, so i don't see how the document could be in use at the time!

This file is quite important to me, and while I have a backup from the start of the month, I worked a lot on it since, and it would really be a bother to redo all this. So hopefully, the file is recoverable,

Thanks a lot for any help in getting it back!

Perhaps you upgraded while the file was still open; the lock message would indicate this is a distinct possibility. Outside of OpenOffice rename the file to type .zip and try to open that with an archive utility (normally double clicking on it will cause the system archive manager to attempt to open it). If it does not open, it is seriously damaged and I suggest wasting no more time on it. If it does open extract content.xml; in that you will find your (unformatted) data.

that would make sense. It was supposed to be closed, but i use it a lot, so that might be possible. In the meantime, I realized I could recover it from windows, and I did, it made my lose todays work since the save was from yesterday, but better than a weeks worth!

Thanks for that hypothesis though. I was really wondering if this would eventually ruin my other files, but I guess it wont if that"s what happened.

Before you check your other files, open your copy of Open Office without a file and verify that you are reporting here the version number reported by your version of Open Office.
If it is Open Office and it is reporting 4.4.1, then you have an unofficial version of Open Office.
The latest official version of Open Office, at this time, is 4.1.1
If you have Libre Office, rather than Open Office, then 4.4.1 is a possible version, but not the latest.
If you are seeing Open Office and version 4.4.1, then I strongly suggest you uninstall it using Revo Uninstaller using the Advanced mode, then run thorough anti-virus and malware scans.
Once that is complete and you are satisfied that your system is clean, download a fresh copy of Open Office from http://www.openoffice.org/download
After selecting the version you want, you will be redirected to the SourceForge servers where, after a small delay, your download will start automatically. Do not click on anything on the Source Forge site

I have a similar problem. I recently upgraded from Open Office 3.1 to 4.1.1
All of my files now seem to open with a "document in use" and I can only open them as "Read-only" or an editable copy. Is there a way to correct this? Should I use the Revo Uninstaller as previously mentioned? How does this differ from just uninstalling the program?

With OpenOffice closed, enable "view hidden files" (Look it up if you don't know how to do it). Then delete any lock files in your OpenOffice file directories. These have names similar to

Code: Select all

.~lock.fred.odt#
and are only a few hundred bytes in size, whereas their owning file is always several kilobytes at least.

Thank you for your suggestion but the hidden files did not show up. I uninstalled the Apache Open Office with the Revo UnInstaller as was suggested to the previous poster and then installed Libre, which seems to work fine.
