[Solved] Glitches in OpenOffice 4.1.1 Draw

Post by maxadiff »

Seems this latest version is flawed? It's certainly not as trouble-free as the previous few I've had.
About a month ago, an uninvited download of the latest, 4.1.1, appeared last thing one night, which "force-dumped" the new 4.1.1 down to my computer without any previous warning or notice it was about to be offered, etc.
Yes, it asked me, but at the late hour, I was surprised and just hit OK - I'd even shut down my browser by then.
It sucked all my "Gradients" and "Hatching" custom schemes out, and replaced them with the original few of the new software.
So I have to start customizing the many I had made over the last 4 or more years with OO Draw.
No expert with computers, I searched for the old Gradients and Hatching folders, found some even older ones, but couldn't locate the large collection I'd built up. I hold a slim hope that the collections are still hiding on the hardrive somewhere, but no luck finding them.
On top of that annoyance, the newer 4.1.1 version of Draw has a few glitches.
Sometimes, the scroll will not work when an object is highlighted.
Sometimes it jams, and nothing moves when I try.
Other small, but troublesome glitches occur also. Sorry I can't recall exactly what, now.
All together, they add up to making this later version noticeably poorer than the previous versions I've had.
It has to be said, there are improvements, here and there.
Is it possible that I only need to uninstall this and reinstall it?
I don't know how to though, always fearing deleting the wrong files etc.
Has anyone else found failings with this DRAW 4.1.1?
To now, I've recommended all Open Source software, just for it's integrity.
What worries me is that because Open Office software is so good, and successful,
1, the open contributor regime can be subverted by less than Honorable programmers, as oft' just for the malicious fun of it, or eager to get-in on the act, and
2, commercial interests WILL come in and try reduce the quality of your fab' software products.
3, it's not unknown that a corporation will make it's "free" software troublesome so users will be forced to buy the product.
I assume there's a strong enough programmer/contributor base here to secure the products from these "invasions" etc?
Always said Open Source software is the future for computing.
4, it's a fact that a number of "govt agencies" do not like free internet and computer software etc, mainly because they're psychos, as well as tied to corporate profiteering. So, using their unwarranted "open license" to walk in on anyone, they do so to this type of operation, to weaken them.
They cannot win. But they can be very "pesty" little fellas.
Sorry for the wall of text.

Apache OpenOffice does not do any automated downloads/installations. I'm afraid you got caught by some malware. I suggest you uninstall that software, run virus and malware scans of your system and download Apache OpenOffice starting from www.openoffice.org. The download link there will redirect you to a page on SourceForge and the download will start automatically after a few seconds. Do not click any links on the SourceForge page, just wait.

Thanks heaps, FJCC! I suspected something awry when it dumped the way it did. But, hey, where I am, I get that, and left it, until now. (It's complicated.)

I happened to scan for viruses more recently and the Norton 360 found a "heuristic virus and deleted it with no probs.

Info off the scan, detection and deletion file by the Norton software;
SAPE.Heur.91F11 - DETECTED & DELETED VIRUS
Scan Information:
Virus Defs Version: 2015.09.22.009
Virus Defs Seq ID: 168012

If that could be related, dunno, but may be useful for you?

So, only concern is uninstalling the malware version. Assume that'll be cool.

I'll do it, and do as you recomm from Apache, then get back to you. Must say..., "Very strange?" Being a puppet of MK-Ultra may explain it all!

And apologies for posting the top question twice. I couldn't see any sign on these pages the 1st went through,

Catch ya'! And thanks for the prompt reply. Reinstalled (!) my faith in Open Office!

Strongly recommend uninstalling the malware version using http://www.revouninstaller.com/ in it's most aggressive (I think they call it advanced) mode.
Do this BEFORE installing a good version. as obtained per FJCC's post

Thanks FJCC.
Followed your directions and got absolutely lost - ha! typical of me on computers.
Laptop jammed thrice, from RF and EMR locally, so after lots of uninstalling etc, after downloading as you suggested, to now, it works fine.
Now, it's looking good.
Thanks heaps once more.
