64-bit OOo availability

Post by pitonyak »

I thought that I had read that OOo version 3.0 would be available in 64-bit versions, but now I can not find anything at all concrete. Has anyone else seen anything else about this.

I know that certain Linux distributions already have 64-bit versions, but I am referring to official builds. How about for Windows? I can find nothing about that either. Just curious...

Yes, exactly that link... Thanks.

I did not find 64-bit dev builds when I looked for them.
I also do not see 64-bit beta builds.
I assume that I will not see 64-bit windows builds either.

The irony for me is that Linux feels like it is much further along with working with 64-bits than Windows...

Andrew, I recall reading somewhere (and I can't remember where, but probably one of the GullFOSS posts) that the 64bit builds were a follow-up issue in the 3.0 life-cycle, that is they're priority in the Dev builds is to release for functional testing. Regression onto x86-64 will come later. So I expect will will start to see x86-64 at some point.
Ubuntu 11.04-x64 + LibreOffice 3 and MS free except the boss's Notebook which runs XP + OOo 3.3.

My take, based on the links posted here, is that
Providing 64-bit support in the original source code will ease the burden on existing 64-bit distributions. By officially supporting 64-bits, fewer bugs will be introduced during the conversion process. The initial release of OOo on Fedora 9 contained a 64-bit conversion error, for example. In the future, if Sun decides to move to 64-bits, they will be ready.
At least that is my conclusion as of right now...
