Post by GeirOve »

Hello,
I am working on a school assignment, and have done quite a bit of work. When I open the OO program now, my file is gone with all the work I did yesterday.

There is a file wich are named ODT_0 under backup, but how do I open that one? I just get ######### on all the documents

Reboot your computer and see if the file(s) open. If not, i fear your file is damaged beyond repair. In that case look in the directories pointed to by /Tools /Options /OpenOffice /Paths for temporary and backup files. If there are files with arbitrary names such as adtfsg.klj or ODT.bak, rename these to .odt and see if they contain your data. Run PhotoRec or Recuva and see if they find a delete previous file.

how can it be damaged?, its a file that OO has saved by itself, i can read the date and time its saved and its a quick save/backup save i guess that is done automatically. The file is in the backup folder you are mentioning. The file is named ODT_0. Thank you for your response

Whether I'm right or wrong about your file being damaged, reboot your computer and see if the file opens. As a general rule, when OpenOffice shows a file as containing #### it is damaged beyond repair; this can be caused by a program or system crash or sometimes by too speedy a computer power down, which didn't give the hardware/software write buffers time to flush.

If you upload the file to the Forum (upload tab below Submit button on PostReply or Full Editor screens) I'll have a look - sometimes files will open on another computer and a resave on that will rescue them.

Maybe you were saving onto a USB drive or memory stick?

It's quite common for such removable media to lead to problems.

A quick search throws up reports of corrupt files on SSDs.

It seems to be that one but on a larger scale (you talk about documents): 22 pages term paper replaced with pound signs.
Does it occur on a single file only?
