An error occurred during registration of extensions!

Post by dyett »

I am still getting this error trying to install OpenOffice 4.1.1 on Windows 7. Is there a fix that works?

What extensions? Is this on an install of 4.1.1 which brings forward an older user profile?

Without detailed information I can only suggest you check the Java installation, as Java is often used to build extensions. For OpenOffice on windows this needs to be 32 bit Java, which may need to be explicitly selected in /Tools /Options /OpenOffice /Java.

Your signature says that you have OOo 3.3 on Windows XP. Are you upgrading from OOo 3.3 on Windows 7?

I am upgrading from OOo 4.0.0 on Windows 7. There are no extensions installed on the current version, and Java is activated. Windows XP has never been installed on this computer!

Have you downloaded from
http://www.openoffice.org/download
This is the only site from which we recommend one download.

If your Windows 7 is 64 bit, you must install 32 bit Java for OpenOffice to see it. We can find a URL for 32 bit Java if you need one. You may also need to be logged onto Win 7 with Admin privileges.

Yes, that's where I got the version I am installing.

The Java installed is 32-bit (Version 1.7.0_71), and the current version of OO sees it OK (OpenOffice/Java). And yes, I am Administrator.

I see that there is also a 64-bit version of Java on this machine. Is that a problem?

OO is seeing the 32-bit version, though.

No, both versions of Java can live side by side. When it needs Java OpenOffice must have the 32 bit version registered in /Tools /Options /OpenOffice /Java. I'm not 100% certain that it actually needs Java for installation. It certainly does for many of its wizards and for some of its database functions. Are you certain that is the registered version?

I haven't used Windows in years, so suggest you wait for a more Windows informed user to advise.

Yeah, the 32-bit version is the registered one.

Many thanks for your effort.

How do I get support for this product? I cannot install OO 4.1.1, there's no answer here. I reported it as a bug, and the response said that was not appropriate! Well, if it's not a bug, what is it? This is the worst support ever. I am now telling my clients that OO is NOT a usable product.

This does not occur on most installations of Windows. Until a bug can be caused on all installations of a troublesome Operating System there is no way developers can investigate it. The problem is local to your computer.

This is a User manned support forum for a free software; we give of our time and our knowledge on a pro bono basis. We cannot support a problem we cannot see. There is no official, paid support, forum.

If you want a suggestion, I advise removing the existing OpenOffice with (say) Revo Uninstaller at its most aggressive, rebooting your computer, then installing OpenOffice 4.1.1 from a fresh (and verified) download from
http://www.openoffice.org/download
after disconnecting from the Internet and disabling your antivirus until after installation of OO.

Of course, this may leave you with no working OpenOffice - if you have "clients", you presumably have sufficient technical knowledge to make an informed decision on your course of action.

I managed software customer support for several years. I always considered something that didn't work as designed to be a bug. I always worked with customers to isolate and repair problems in their installations. I guess in modern terms that isn't so! Decreeing that an error must occur in all installations in order to be a bug seems silly and stupid. There are several reports of this problem on the Internet (but no solution). Seems like someone should be concerned about it.

You misunderstand me - I didn't say it must occur on all installations, only that we need to know how to configure test computer(s) to cause it. Until then no one can move to a solution as they can't see it and hence can't explore possible causes. Any developers using Windows 7 don't have this problem; if they had, it would have been fixed.

Thanks again for your help. I understand that this is not your problem. It's just the result of using unsupported software. That's what I'll have to tell my clients: OO is a good product, but if you have trouble, you're on your own, except for the efforts of volunteers like yourself!

One of these days I might have a look at the sources to see if I can isolate this problem, but it's really not a big deal.

If it were my system, I'd use Revo Uninstall and remove 4.0.x, reboot then install 4.1.1

I would try this except that, according to Windows, OO is not installed! Revo doesn't find it, and it is not on the Windows software removal list either. Tried reinstalling 4.0.0, but got the same error as with 4.1.1. So now I have a working OO 4.0.0 that I can't update and I can't (officially) remove--I'm kind of stuck.

I don't understand why you had removed extensions before update.

Tried that--didn't help. Tried removing extensions because the error concerns registration of extensions.

Deleting the User Profile should remove all traces of the extensions. You ought then be able to install OO 4.1.1.

If you haven't already use Revo Uninstaller Free http://www.revouninstaller.com/revo_uni ... nload.html with its most aggressive settings to remove the current install. Then re-install.

Sorry, I meant the user folder, not users.

Revo won't work because, as I noted above, OO is not "officially" installed so Revo cannot find it to remove!

Years ago, when I ran Windows, I remember once deleting the Program Files subdirectory for a program (can't remember which... 8 years ago) to remove its files, also any configuration files for that program. I then ran a registry cleaner to clean the registry, rebooted the computer and installed the latest version. I don't advise doing this, as you could easily end up with a computer that won't boot, but if you choose to do this, on your own head ...

Deleting the OO User Profile should remove any knowledge of previous extensions, so I suspect the error message comes from elsewhere - possibly Java. If you start computer in Safe Mode, will OO then install?
