[Solved] Cannot edit any existing OpenOffice document

Post by Bumpalot »

[img]file:///home/bumpy/Desktop/Pictures/ForumPics/index%20outofbounds.png[/img]
This popup message appears on opening any of my open office documents. On clicking it, the document immediately closes.
Have been using Open Office for over a month now, with no problem.
This problem is reported as a bug, name "index outofbounds", but apparently has not been resolved.
Any suggestions? :?

Hi and welcome tot he forum!

You need to upload the file so that we can view it. Use the field at the bottom of the post in the full editor view.

May be similar to this one: Index out of bonds error ( AOO 4.1.1 & Kubuntu 14.04).

Sorry, am using your Forum for the 1st time - where would I find your suggested "field at the bottom of the post in the full editor view"?

Click the Post Reply button. Just below the box where you would type a response there will be a tab labeled Upload Attachment. There you will find a Browse button through which you can point to your file.

From which site did you download? We only recommend
http://www.openoffice.org/download
which will redirect to SourceForge where the files are stored. The download should start automatically in about five seconds.

I suggest uninstalling the existing OpenOffice, and installing from a fresh download from the above site.

But you already have LibreOffice "on board". Are you really sure that you need OpenOffice too?
Please, edit this topic's initial post and add "[Solved]" to the subject line if your problem has been solved.

A lot has happened since my last post - Am now using kubuntu 14.10, Uninstalled Libre Office (because I don't like it!) downloaded Apache OpenOffice v4.1.1_Linux_x86-64 from http://www.openoffice.org/download.
Have the same problem as previous: as soon as I attempt to make any change (type one character, add 1 space etc), the "index out of bounds" popup message appears. Will not allow any further action on the document until I click the "index out of bounds OK button". The document then closes.

I suspect the problem is arising because LibreOffice hasn't been properly uninstalled from your computer. If you have Synaptic installed, open it and see if it finds any LibreOffice components.

bumpy@bumpyputer:~$ sudo apt-get purge libreoffice*
[sudo] password for bumpy:

E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), is another process using it?

Am not sure how to change permission of dpkg.

After reboot, using Synaptic, it attempted to remove libraoffice, which I want to happen, however after it attempted this, & failed, this message was displayed.
An error occurred
The following details are provided:
E: icedtea-netx: 10:subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 2
E: icedtea-7-plugin: 10:dependency problems - leaving unconfigured
How can I fix this?
Sure appreciate you hanging in on this!!

You can try "apt-get -f install"
But it seems linked to icedtea, not AOO.

Have you tried to search for the error message?
It seems to be a rather frequent issue, see this query for example.

Note: no other argument is expected after the sudo apt-get -f install.
