[Issue] Impress crashes OO 4.1.1

Post by jmk118 »

After installing OO 4.1.1, Impress frequently shuts down with a message that there was an unexplained error. When I go through the recovery process, at the stage that says I will get an error report, all that happens is the ap restores the presentation at the failure point. (No error report) I can only insert one or two slides (if that many) between crashes. I have no customization on my installation. I am operating Windows 7 Home system.

Opening and attempting to run a previously created presentation also crashes the OO session. I have all current Windows updates installed

The error report has actually been missing for a few versions. For some reason, and I have no idea as to why, the coding that generates that message is still in place, even though the code to generate an error report has been removed.
As to the problem you are actually having, my first suggestion is to reset your user profile, as described here

Same problem-impress crashes as developing a program. Can slowly build as saving manually often and starting again after each crash, very time consuming.
When doing slide show, the program crashes with a note "SEH Exception: Access Violation" after showing about 8 (it varies) out of 75. I have been unable to reset the user profile as the note does not address Windows 8.1.
What am I to do with the bug report?

I was able to create a presentation on another PC that had not been updated to 4.1.1, but had trouble saving the presentation. the next opening after closing several slides were corrupted. I finally saved the presentation as a windows presentation. It takes forever to reopen, but it does work.

As a workaround (for emergency use!) remember that you can Export as PDF the entire presentation. It will display using a PDF viewer (on all computers) with loss of animations and possibly sound.

I have been having this problem on new Dell PC with W8.1 running Open Office 4.1.1 When running slide show after about 8 slides crashes with message "SEH EXCEPTION: Access Violation" I assumed a dodgy image so deleted slide and ran again, crashed on next slide. Saved as a PowerPoint presentation, runs fine. I just don't like PPt though.

It looks like this problem was introduced in 4.1.1

On certain slideshows, the problem shows with 4.1.1 on both Windows 7 Pro and Windows 8.1
Also, it is not possible to export as PDF, or Save As Powerpoint - both these actions also crash OO.

As I needed urgently to display a presentation, I downgraded to OpenOffice 4.1.0 and the problem went away.

Let's hope this is fixed quickly. We have loved OO for years, but problems like this erode trust.

just had same problem, however file created in 4.1.1 runs ok in 4.1.0 but crashes in 4.1.1 It would seem that the problem is in the "Play Slide Show" function in latest version. :?

There is a much bigger problem than just Impress. I am getting program crashes most days that usually recover OK in Text as well as impress. Today I have used spreadsheet where I haven't previously had a problem but lost some data input with a program crash that did not recover my latest input, so I changed Recovery time to 2 mins and continued. The screen duly flickered every 2 mins and I managed an hour of input and then the program crashed. On recovery a message said program failed during automatic save and opened up with all the hour's input lost. I am fuming!!! I have used Open Office for the last time! It used to be a good suite of programs but it is now totally unreliable. Until there is a fix for windows 8.1
I shall use my old version of Microsoft Office, it may not have all the features of Open Office but at least it doesn't crash every few minutes.

I too am having this problem with 4.1.1 and Windows 8.1. Any .ppt file that I created under Windows Vista and Oo3 crashes within a few slides of starting the slide show. Also spreadsheets frequently crash. It is causing me a huge amount of lost time, not to mention anger. I am having to revert to an old PC in order to work. Has anyone tried LibreOffice?

I downloaded LibreOffice last night, have used it on a few OpenOffice items I had been having crashes with and it seems to work OK and at first glance appears to have all the features. I will use it for a couple of weeks and report back. I also renamed etc the 'User' folder as advised elsewhere in this thread. I then uninstalled version 4.1.1 of OO and reinstalled version 4.1.0 but was still getting crashes. There is clearly a problem with W8.1 at least. I have been one of OO's greatest evangelists but have been disillusioned recently. I'm not saying LibreOffice is any better (yet) but I must try something.

Thanks for the reply. I too have spread the word on OpenOffice as I have found it meets all my general office suite needs but am getting very frustrated with these Win 8.1 problems. No matter how many features the software has, if it is unstable or does not work then it is useless.

This is not a solution to your problems but might be a workaround. My experience with Windows 8, running on a state of the art laptop, was that it ran like a snail. After a few days using it (and I used Windows since its beginning) I removed it completely and installed Linux, which flew on the same machine. Since then I have installed linux, standardising on Xubuntu, on all my computers except for a legacy machine running XP to handle older graphics files. On the linux platform I have found OO to be completely stable for my uses - Writer editing some very large files (1,000,000 words) and preparing/giving presentations with Impress.

Pending finding a fix for OO's instability on your Win 8 system, It is possible to install most if not all linux distros in dual-boot mode with Win 8. It might be worth trying this, first in Live CD/USB mode, then in dual-boot mode. You may be pleasantly surprised,

I've had the same issue with Impress 4.1.1, running on Win 7, so I don't think it is specific to Win 8. I have a document with 114 images in it. I don't even have to start the slide show, all I have to do is start scrolling down the slide sorter on the left side and by the time I hit around #14 and it goes into recovery mode. I'm using the "down" arrow key to scroll. The same file works fine in LibreOffice on my Linux system.

I backed off to Ver. 4.1.0 and it works properly, so like others have indicated, it might be something unique to 4.1.1. My wife, also with Win 7 and 4.1.1, is writing a book with about 140 images and it is losing images in Writer, for no apparent reason. Related? Maybe.

Anyway, thought I'd throw in my two cents worth.

I recently bought a new notebook running Windows 8, and installed Openoffice and have been experiencing all the symptoms described in this post since. I don't have any problems with older OO running on XP and have been a user since the 1990s.
Reading the thread, I presume the easiest solution to back-off to the earlier OO version?

Impress 4.1.1 crashed just after opening the same PowerPoint file in both Windows 7 and Puppy Linux 5.5 but curiously on an old laptop with only 384 Mb of ram and a 400 MHz processor running Windows XP it was able to open the file and save it in odp format.

I try to teach 70 and 80 year olds how to expand their computing skills. I have always recommended Writer because it's free and because the interface is simpler than the latest Word. So far so good.
I wanted to get them to do presentations - Impress is a doddle I thought.
But as soon as I started testing it - this is 4.1.1 - it crashed after inserting two or three 4mb slides. Or it refuses with 'Grahics Filter not Found' - or it refuses to make a picture uinserted into a page template fit the frame.

It's no use talking about fixes and work-arounds - my students would have given up long ago - just what I want to avoid.

On the other hand I've tried the Libre version - no problems. It seems to allow mass importing of images as well.

If Apache can't sort this, I'll have to migrate!

Its the end of the semester and I have a ton of work to do, much of it involving power point presentations. What a great time for Impress to stop working properly! I actually had one professor email me saying the assignment I sent her wouldn't open because the file is corrupted. This is just ALL I need right now!

In what format did you send the presentation?

If your OpenOffice does not open, start TaskManager (Ctrl Shift Esc) and kill any soffice processes shown on TaskManager's Processes tab.

I had to remove 4.1.1. I also deleted the user profile. I then downloaded and installed 3.4.1 which I knew worked. After that, I have had no problem. With 4.1.1., after running seven or eight slides on Impress, the program would crash and close. It happened once during a presentation, meaning that I had to finish without slides. This was with Windows 8.1. I had no trouble with earlier versions and indeed have been slow to upgrade since I didn't see anything to be gained. But foolishly, when I finally did upgrade, the crashes started. Impress 4.1.1 was unusable.

I am also having the same problem of 4.1.1 crashing. I too am not getting a message as to what the error is. My suspicion is there is an error in one of the slides, when I try to move to the end of my slides it crashes, but I cannot pinpoint which slide is giving the problem.

I was having this problem with a previous presentation. I split the presentation into two presentation in that case, then a friend of mine use PowerPoint to merge them. That cased problem, because all the pictures and graphic had to be lighten one by one. I had 69 images. This was one hour before the live presentation.

Am I going to have to become a slave to Microsoft again?
