[Solved] Installation Problem

Postby kilogulf59 » Tue Oct 07, 2014 2:21 pm

Hi,

I get the notices to DL new extensions and can never get them to install.

I DL file "dict-en.oxt" to my desktop. Then open it in the office writer using the "file" and "open" commands.

When I get this far I'm stumped...what file am I suppose to open and where is it???

Usually you just double click on the extension file and OpenOffice will offer to install it - see the attached screenshot

If your file downloads with extension .zip, rename to .oxt and all should be well, else right click on it and choose to open with OpenOffice. Where the extension is depends - some extensions add themselves to the menubar, others (such as the dictionary) need to be selected in /Tools /Options /OpenOffice(.org) /Language settings /Languages (see screenshot)

Note: /Options is under Preferences on a Mac

where English (UK) is selected - the checkmark beside it indicates it is used for spellcheck.

I checked where they go(?) and here's my settings per your instructions...

And the Extension Manager shows the Extension (dictionary) is installed (the second screenshot in your last series, the screenshot entitled "Extension Manager"). Now type some text in Writer and see if misspellings are underlined in red.

OK, misspellings are underlined in red.

Why does it have the options shown then in the pic below? That's what confused me as I thought I was supposed to click on one of them like"add" to add the dictionary. Shouldn't it say "installed successful" or something to that effect? I'm not arguing, I'm just trying to understand this.

You have been dropped to the Extension Manager level and it is now addressing you. The Dictionary extension is expanded (Blue) because you have only one extension installed and so it is selected (by default) in Extension Manager. If it were not installed, it wouldn't have buttons for Disable or Remove (one sometimes needs to Disable rather than to remove, but let's not go there today!)

The Extension Manager itself shows the bottom row of buttons: Help is obvious, Add permits you to install more Extensions from downloaded .oxt files without exiting OpenOffice, Check for Updates does just that, checking for updates for installed Extensions (it should find update for the dictionary, dated 2014/10/01) and Close closes the Extension Manager
I append two screenshots - the first shows some installed extensions in my Extension Manager, the second shows the Dictionary extension selected to permit it be removed or disabled.

Many OO users will use /Tools /Extension Manager to directly interact with Extension Manager and install extensions using the Add button, rather than double clicking on the .oxt file

Note: Extension Manager is under Preferences on a Mac.
