English/Cyrillic fonts conflict

Post by sergpetrov »

Hi,
when I work with two languages in one line, the cursor position is somehow misleading, it is about two letters on the left to the place where the editing actually happens. And the words are sometimes jammed (see attach, the red arrow shows the actual position of the cursor). Is there any way to eliminate this irritating bug?

Welcome to the forum.

Can you upload a small example file with the problem - use the Upload attachment tab below where you write a post.

No, you've only uploaded a screen-shot. A section of the actual file allows us to test the problem on our computers.

I'm not seeing the problem here, but testing your document would be helpful.

Here's what I tried:

you.re right, there is _almost_ no problem in your file except the headings where the cursor begin to position itself not so precisely as it should, if you try to insert cyrillic.
here's my file, i understand now that the problem is not omnipresent; here you can see the trouble (hopefully) in the lines with the words "Deichmann, Biologen" and "Ulrich Schultz, edы., Medizin". I see also that the line is somewhat jammed, too

I cannot seem to find any problem in your uploaded file. If I place my cursor anywhere in the English or Russian text, and press space, the space appears at the cursor position. The cursor 'jumps' when moving across "edы., Medizin" (following Schultz) because the " ы " is one character, not two characters.

Or am I misunderstanding the problem?
Edit: Screeenshot replaced with one where hidden characters are displayed

The shaded dots are "non-breaking spaces". Perhaps, if pasting these from the Internet, you should use Paste Special and select "Unformatted text". Hyphenation may be turned off. You can erase these "non-breaking spaces" and replace them with ordinary spaces - try this and see if it eases the problem.

ы is one character, you understand all right. I saw your screenshot and it gave me an idea. I toggled off the nonprinting characters, and it seems that the problem disappeared. well, at least it is hidden with those characters.

I still cannot understand why it is OK for me, but not for you. Toggling the hidden characters ON/OFF shouldn't affect things.

I also checked Format > Character > Position > Spacing was correct. I also swapped fonts and used Arial and Calibri and it was OK.. Testfonts tells me there are no missing fonts.

So I am at a loss to explain what is happening on your system. It appears as though the spacing is being done incorrectly, but I have no idea why. I unzipped the doc file and looked at the worddocument file and got as below.
cursor.png
A thought. What happens if you save it as an odt file - does that fix it? It is much easier to examine and analyse an odt file than a doc file. This is the XML from when I save it as an odt which looks perfectly OK.

I saved it as .odt (see attach), but it didn't change anything. and it seems that the problem appears, as was noted previously in the words around the nonbreaking space when the nonprinting characters are toggled on. I start typing in russian and by the third caracter the cursor jumps one caracter to the left (don't know whether i am clear enough). If you need some additional information, please feel free to ask: I was living with this problem for a long time, but before it wasn't so marked (it could be solved by toggling the left spacing of the paragraf). in the last two versions of OO it was unsupportable.

Note that it ("edы., Medizin" following Schultz) happens where the Style T1 text ends, and the style T2 text starts. Both styles seem to me to be identical, except T1 is normal and T2 is italic. So, try switching off italic and make all the text normal. Is it now OK? If so, it is probably a spacing problem when using italic.

The XML is as below:

Code: Select all

no, the italic didn't change much. i notice also that cursor is becoming misleading when trying to edit the end of the line (in non-printing symbols mode)

This may be a problem specific to OO on the Mac.

Did you ever try a different version of OO where the text was displayed correctly?

I am sure, this is specific to mac. well, i've been working on different macs and on OO for at least five years now (and all the time with nonprinting characters on), but I don't remember all the versions. All I know for sure is that from the beginning there was a similar problem, when the cursor was not exactly positioned when in Justified paragraph alignment mode (which disappeared when I toggled the align left mode). But the problem became more irritating and marked in last two versions.
