Post by saskatchewan »

Whenever I try to open Open Office I get an Error loading BASIC of document file. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the sofware but the problem persists.

I am running A DuoCore Pentium with Windows XP.

OK, now we know that you are using Windows and stir up your hard disk to solve obscure problems.
:?: What is the exact error message :?:
:?: Does the problem occur with all documents :?:
:?: Does the problem occur with new documents (File>New>...) :?:
:?: If the problem occurs with one file or a few files. Can you tell us some details about the file(s). Are we guessing about Word documents :?:
:?: What is your office version (Menu:Help>About...) :?:

Quick fix: rename your OOo user profile (\Documents and settings\<user>\Application data\OpenOffice.org2), OOo will create a new one.

Thanks to add '[Solved]' at beginning of your first post title (edit button) if your issue has been fixed.

The first message is:

Error loading BASIC of \document file:///C:?Documents%20and%20Settings/shawn%20halter/Applications%20Data?OpenOffice.org2/user/unmo_packages/cache/uno_packages/8B.tmp_/ConvertTextToNumber-1.0.0.oxt/CT2N/script.xlb:
General Error.
General input/output error.
Then I click OK and it gives me the same message again.
So I click OK

Then it opens.
I am Running XP.

Deleting the /8B.tmp_/ConvertTextToNumb folder should do it. Extensions are sometimes messed up by upgrades.

Any suggestions on how I can find it?

Make your file browser display the hidden files and folders and follow the path given in the error message you've posted above (%20 are for spaces).

That could be the reason for the error message. Call menu:Tools>Extensions... and remove the "Text-to-Columns" add-in. If this is not possible for some reason, shut down the office including the quick-starter and rename/move your profile C:\Documents and Settings\shawn halter\Applications Data\OpenOffice.org2\ as Hagar suggested.

That did the trick!!

Thanks

However, for some reason the OpenOffice icon does not show up in the bottom right corner of my screen. Is that because it is not in my startup?

See in menu Tools>Options>OOo>Memory (or General, don't remember exactly) and check the Quickstarter box.

What exactly did the trick? Could you remove any reminders of the text-to-columns add-on or did you move the profile folder?

For what its worth, I have Vista and I had this same problem. I solved it by: 1. Making sure all hidden files were shown. 2. Going to AppData/Roaming/OpenOffice.org 3. I tried to delete this file but, was unable to, because Vista would not allow me to take authorization of this file. I used a utility called Unlocker which allowed me to delete this file. 4. Then I reinstalled OpenOffice and this took care of this nagging problem.

Hope this helps someone

Error Message when opening NeoOffice:

Error loading BASIC of document
file:///Users/user/Library/Preferences/NeoOffice-3.0/basic/dialog.xlc/:
General Error.
General input/output error.

I found "dialog.xlb" at this location:

Users/user/Library/Preferences/NeoOffice-3.0/basic/Standard/dialog.xlb.

The file structure inside Users/user/Library/Preferences/NeoOffice-3.0/basic is
script.xlc
Standard
Module 1.xba
dialog.xlb
script.xlb

The content of script.xlc is:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<!DOCTYPE library:libraries PUBLIC "-//OpenOffice.org//DTD OfficeDocument 1.0//EN" "libraries.dtd">
<library:libraries xmlns:library="http://openoffice.org/2000/library" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">
<library:library library:name="Standard" xlink:href="$(USER)/basic/Standard/script.xlb/" xlink:type="simple" library:link="false"/>
</library:libraries>

I copied "dialog.xlb" into the basic folder and tried again. The error did not go away, but it changed the message, this time complaining that the document it could not load was "dialog.xli"

I experienced the same error discussed in this thread. In my case 2 pop-up error windows appeared each time I opened any OO document: (1) Error loading BASIC document file:///C:Users/.../dialog.xlc/:
(2) Error loading BASIC document file:///C:Users/.../dialogs.xli/:
[Notice "dialog" has "s" added in one of the error messages.]

Here's how I solved the problem: I first browsed the file path mentioned in Error 1 above; I had to select folder options to show hidden files. But the "dialog.xlc" file was not in the folder shown in the error message. I then used the Windows search utility to search for a file "dialog.xlc". Again, I had to use the "Advanced" search feature to search for hidden files. The search utility found 2 "dialog.xlc" files in other OpenOffice folders. I then copied one of those files and pasted it in the folder shown in the error message. The OO software worked perfectly then, and I did not have to repeat the copy/paste routine for the second error.

The same error massage occurred when I upgraded to 4.13 on WIN10.
AOO413m1(Build:9783) - Rev. 1761381

I could not find the file in
c:\users\name\appdata\roaming\OpenOffice\4\user\basic,
but did find dialog.xlc in the downloaded files. :- OpenOffice 4.1.3 (en-US) Installation Files
I extracted the file and saved it to the above address.

Problem appears to have been solved both problems.

Now all I have to do is find why my jre is not available, the program lists no jre s even tho I loaded the latest version. None of the solutions solved this.

You must download and install a 32 bit Java. This will have 586 in its file name. After installing it, start OpenOffice and in /Tools /Options /OpenOffice :Java select that installation.

Thanks, but I have tried that many times, and downloaded the latest jre , jre 1.8.0_111, and this has been verified by Oracle. I even tried saving it to another directory.

Still no luck. _____?

Are you certain sure that you have a 32 bit Java, as well as a 64 bit Java, and that the 32 bit Java is selected in OO? Oracle will only check that your Java version matches the bitness of your Operating System.

I have both. My PC has a dual processor pentium 2120 and a 64 bit WIN 10 installed.
I have just repeated the process.
New download of jre-6u111-windows-i586.exe
Install into c:\Program Files (x86)\java\jre 1.8.0-111
Oracle says version is OK
Resterted OO writer -tools -options -openoffice-java- select path - c:\Program Files (x86)\java\jre 1.8.0-111 File has been updated to 30/11/16 -what more can I do?????

My Win XP is running OK using Java 1.7.0.45. Perhaps wait for some further advice - I rarely use Windows.

Thanks for your effort. I will just have to X the window when it appears, which is a minor irritant.
