[Solved] Could a Linux User test something for me?

Post by djl47 »

I just started running Fedora 20 with Libre Office (The default) and the spell checker is partially broken. It underlines the misspelled word but when I right click for the hints they don't appear. Spell checker works fine in LO Write. Could someone running Open Office on a Linux system try out the spell checker in Calc?
Thanks

I see no such problem with the Russian language.

I don't know what version of LibO comes with F20 but spellcheck in LibO 4.2.4.2 works correctly for me (F17).

The spellcheck configuration in OO (and LibO, I expect) is prone to break down rather spontaneously. I'd try a complete re-start of LibO, including any quickstarter process (log out and log back in is one way). If that doesn't help, then try a fresh settings profile: [Tutorial] The OOo user profile

This happens on a freshly booted system. I'll try creating a new document in LO to see if there is some quirk of using a spreadsheet originally created in OO and extensively revised in AOO. I'll look at the profile as well but it's brand new.

Will LO and AOO coexist on the same Linux system?

Both co-exist in my system, I can even launch both simultaneously.

I don't know the current situation, but there used to be a problem with nasty conflicts between the Fedora-packaged OO and the rpms provided by Sun/Oracle: whenever Fedora would release updated rpms, the update would remove pieces of OO installed from the outside source.

So even if there's no conflict in install or running the software, there may be conflicts in the packaging/update process.

I've taken to keeping all the installs completely separate, both in package management and file location. OO and LibO use different profile directories, so they don't step on each other.

I'm a noob with Linux. I took the HP Red Hat class several years ago and have only dabbled since then.
I followed the RPM instructions here: https://wiki.openoffice.org/wiki/Docume ... uide/Linux
Everything looks like it worked except the part highlighted below. Any thoughts on how to make these two coexist? If not how do I run AOO?

When I ran into this (or similar) on Ubuntu I used Synaptic (you could use equivalent on RED Hat) to remove libreoffice-core, after which the OpenOffice install proceeded without problem. This removed LibreOffice entirely. If you wish to run both suites there is some other fix, but I don't know it.

I did not do anything special, just installed AOO and LO from RPMs obtained from the respective official sites. As for the desktop integration, I’ve installed *freedesktop-menus packages rather than distro-specific ones, no conflict whatsoever, only a minor glitch: the menus show that I still have AOO 4.0.1, but it’s 4.1 already (not sure if it relates somehow to the issue discussed and anyway I don’t care much). Just one guess/hint: AOO was installed first (well, upgraded, as it lived in my computer since the prehistorical ages of 2.x).

I tried installing the free desktop menus package and it gave me the same error. Thanks for the ideas.

Does this look like all of Libreoffice?

If the error is preventing installation of desktop integration, it won't stop you setting up launchers to start LibO components or OO components directly.

I'll have to learn how to do this. Is there some formal nomenclature that I can google?

I've done something similar once or twice, but I wouldn't attempt to guide someone in doing this because of my imperfect knowledge. Query <launcher> and <your distro> for more coherent information.

[root@localhost desktop-integration]# exit
The problem arises because both want to install the same executable file: /usr/bin/soffice

This is a trivial problem but there's no way to "just ignore it" that I know of.

You can easily see what this actually is:
  • $ file /usr/bin/soffice
    /usr/bin/soffice: symbolic link to `/usr/lib/libreoffice/program/soffice'
So it's just a link to the actual openoffice/libreoffice program, which is installed in its own (different) location. The only conflict is that both want to install the exact same link to the program file.

The desktop integration stuff will just add new items without conflict but they probably expect to start OO/LO through that same link, /usr/bin/soffice, so even if you could get the menus installed, it wouldn't work; they would just launch /usr/bin/soffice, which would still point to OO.

I get around this through sheer laziness: I ignore all the desktop integration stuff and start AOO/LO from the command line--that doesn't care where they are. Since the command line keeps a history, you enter the full location once and after that it's never more than a few key strokes to recall the right command. Once OO/LO are started, the desktop integration is mostly unnecessary.

If you aren't comfortable doing that (using the command line) then you'll have to find some way to get the desktop integration package installed.

Complete!
The package that wouldn't install before installed without any further complaints. Now I have to get spell check working in AOO. The update didn't seem to work properly.

PS: AOO Spell check works now after an update and restarting AOO. Thanks for the help and support.
