[Solved] Apache servers for mailing are Back!

Post by RoryOF »

Normal service is being restored! It may be some time before all is fully back to normal; the Moderators and Volunteers will do their best to clear the backlog, but please be patient - reports are that the servers have several million messages to handle, not all for the Forums, thankfully.

There is a current problem on Apache Mailing List servers. Details at

Re: FYI: Current problem on Apache Mailing lists

It seems that it also affects the Forum since no new user can register the forum anymore (last registration is Wed May 07, 2014 7:55 am UTC).
Users seem to be able to send the registration form but no activation mail is received and the account is not even created in the forum database (so admins can't force the activation).

We are sorry for the inconvenience. Nothing to do for the moment, thanks to be patient.
NB: existing users can still use the forum (post, ...) but they will not get any notification on replies.

Night time in France (I mean time to go to bed), please check the link above for updates until another moderator can follow-up.
Edit: It took several days to release all the messages, 9 millions of them were queued...

Situation not yet resolved: last status message is
UPDATE 9 May 17:20 UTC - We've successfully restored a host from backups and will be starting testing soon. Based on the progress made in those tests we'll try and provide expectations around restoration of service timeline.
There may be a general lesson for long time computer users: remember that life of hard disks is limited. Consider whether any of your disk drives is approaching end of life, and is also securely backed up. Perhaps time to reassess your personal data storage situation?

Perhaps we will all have a quiet, leisurely, non-forum oriented weekend. I'm going out to lunch! [RoryOF, Moderator]

That explains the very low figures about the new posts stat we see since May 7th! We are at 30 to 50 new messages per day...

+1.
But rainy here, not the best weekend for shutting down the servers.

Latest update
UPDATE 10 May 15:45 UTC - We've started pushing live mails through the system - you'll begin to see them trickle in as we gradually open the floodgates to restore service. Expect intermittent spurts for a while.
