Greetings and welcome to the community forum!

It depends on exactly what type of file you've downloaded. Some templates are simple stand-alone documents, others are collections.

But I think, in either case, it would work to first start OO, then use menu: File > Open and select the file that you've downloaded. OO should figure out what type of file you have and take the appropriate action.

It's worth a try at least.

Sorry, I should have been more specific.

Can you give us a link to the page where you got the template? Or at least the full name of the file that you downloaded?

If the name of the file ends in .oxt then you can just File > Open and OO will know what to do to install the file.

If the name ends in .ott or .ost or .opt, then you can use File > Templates > Organize, select "My Templates" then Command > Import Template and choose the downloaded file.

If the name is something else, it will require some other steps, but we'll need to know the name to know what to do with it.

If the downloaded file has an .oxt file name extension, then it's an AOO extension. To install the contained templates, double-click the .oxt file. The Extension Manager should open and install the templates.

I need help as well. I have seen through time there's been a bunch of questions about templates and not any of the answers really helped. How do I install these templates? When I download it from the template site it is in a zip file with a bunch of folders inside of it and no OOT file or ood or anything. Just xml files. Please help.

Use Firefox to download the template or tell us what template you downloaded.

Using firefox is out of the question and it's like that for every template on source force. I'll link you to one.

You can use any download tool exceptMS Internet Explorer and use your downloaded file as is.
You can use MS Internet Explorer and open the file with OpenOffice.
You can use MS Internet Explorer and rename the downloaded file, so it can be loaded into OpenOffice by double-click.

In order to be able to rename the downloads, you've got to fix a well known misconfiguration in MS Windows:
In the folder options you find an option to "hide the extensions of known file types" (or similar). Disable this bullshit and you will see the true names of your files (well, most of them). MS Internet explorer renamed your downloaded basic-resume.ott to basic-resume.zip. You've got to rename it back to basic-resume.ott

Replacing bad software with something better is always an option. This is why I switched to Linux 12 years ago and never regret.
Please, edit this topic's initial post and add "[Solved]" to the subject line if your problem has been solved.

That is the problem. Firefox can be a bit of a memory hog when dealing with graphics but otherwise it is so superiour to IE... Or if you don't like Firefox give Chrome a try.
