A document won't open correctly

Post by paraorech »

Hi,

I've encountered this for the first time. I am afraid the document might be damaged, but it is a really important document so I need it back. I saved it yesterday afternoon and had not opened my computer since then until now. I would like to post screenshots but it won't let me since they are bigger than 128KiB. Anyways, here's what's happening.

1. trying to open the file, a window pops up - ASCII Filter Options (character sets, default fonts, language, paragraph break)
2. after dealing with that, a window saying that "the document file is locked for editing by: Unkown user" so I tried to either open it read-only or open a copy.. both had the same result
3. the result being 7 pages of this only: #########################################################################################################

What do you think is going on? Is there any way I could fix it?

Thanks a lot

Hi and welcome to the forum!

Sadly, quite nothing to do, see: 22 pages term paper replaced with pound signs.

Check the temporary folder of the system (see in OO Tools>Options>OO>Paths). If there are folders like sgmlf.tmp with a file having the same name inside, make a copy of that file, rename it in .odt and cross your fingers. If you have not rebooted, you might have those files still there.

If you want to help fix this problem, you can also do this survey created for this very problem: Document Recovery Survey.

Did you set up File History in Windows 8 to backup your important files?
