Installation fails (please exit OOo & quickstarter)
I downloaded Open Office 3.2. When I attempted to unpack and install the download, the wizard called up this message: "Please exit OpenOffice.org 3.2 and the OpenOffice.org 3.2 Quickstarter before you continue. If you are using a multi-user system, also make sure that no other user has OpenOffice.org 3.2 open." There is no indication that quickstarter is running. When I close OpenOffice 3.2, or if I click OK, the folowing message appears: "The wizard was interrupted before OpenOfffice.org 3.2 could be completely installed . . . please run setup again." When I try again, I get the same result.

Hi and welcome to the forum!
A quick search like that one should help.

Re: Installation fails (please exit OOo & quickstarter)
None of the other tips worked to fix it on Windows 7 when I did Uninstall from Add/Remove Programs. It said OO or the quickstarter was running, but they weren't. There may be a bug in the installer.
Instead I did Change and the Repair radio button, then Change and the Remove radio button. This successfully removed OO when the Add/Remove Programs "Remove" button didn't.

Do Ctrl+Alt+Delete, start the Task Manager and click the Processes tab. Kill soffice.exe and soffice.bin.
Re: Installation fails (please exit OOo & quickstarter)
Amazingly I have encountered exactly this problem in the upgrade from 3.4.1 to 4.0.1.
I found the solution from assbut worked for me. task manager showed no soffice processes running. I went to Add/Remove programs, tried to "delete" OOO 3.4.1, it failed with the same error. But when I chose "change" and the within that selected the option to delete 3.4.1 uninstalled successfully and I then installed 4.0.1
I believe assbut is right that there is an installer bug which, sadly, has still not been fixed in 4.

Re: Installation fails (please exit OOo & quickstarter)
I can't find where this has ever been reported as a bug in OOo/AOO. I've never seen it happen in dozens of installations on Vista and several more on Windows 8. There is a similar bug report filed only last month about the repair option, but no one has reproduced it and it is still unconfirmed.

I have encountered the same bug. I will try assbut's solution. Very frustrating, as I am used to OO just working smoothly all the time, which is one of the main reasons I have been using it for 10 years. I'll report back whether I was able to fix it or not.

Windows 7
I have the same problem, and I'm stuck. I was using 4.1.3, and it quit working. The first time I tried to uninstall it, I got the message. Eventually I got it uninstalled, or at least it does not show up in Programs and Features. Now I cannot re-install it. Same problem.
There is no process running that has anything to do with OpenOffice. I have restarted my computer. No joy.
Also, before attempting to reinstall, I tried to remove the OpenOffice directory from program files(x86). I cannot remove it! A popup says I need SYSTEM access privileges. WTH? That should NOT happen.
I am panicking, because I need to finish a resume.

P.s. I also removed every key in the registry with OpenOffice in its name.

Start TaskManager and kill all "soffice" processes shown on TM's Processes tab (Details tab on Win10).
Note "soffice", with a leading "s".
You may need full administrative rights to see such processes.

Re: Installation fails (please exit OOo & quickstarter)
Task Manager showed no "soffice" process running. Something weird was going on. A program from the OO folder was running, but I don't know what it was. Maybe virus messed with the OO files. In any case, I got it going. What I did was start Windows in safe-mode and delete Program Files(86)/OpenOffice-4. Before I did that, I restored the registry to what it was before I got into the mess.
It is clear that the un-install leaves traces of OO lying about. I know that for sure, because it remembered my name and organization. Is there an un-install-and-I-mean-it program? I'm serious.
Like I said, I'm back on the track. Thanks a bunch.

The uninstall does not remove the OpenOffice User Profile, which contains your name etc. You need to delete this by hand.

I'm having the same issue. I've deleted OO 4.1.1 and renamed user to user.old but I still get the Please exit OpenOffice.org 3.2 and the OpenOffice.org 3.2 Quickstarter before you continue message when I try to install 4.1.3

You need to check and clean out TaskManager, as set out earlier in this thread.steve2526 wrote:I'm having the same issue. Then you may need to do that again with full administrator rights.

Fixed. I was able to manually delete the OO folder and the install went fine.
