[Solved] Enter Data to automatically Copy elsewhere

Post by pscaseys »

SOLVED! :bravo: I am creating a template that will be used frequently. I have created a header that copies itself to each page added. In this header I have inserted a field. I would like this field programmed to copy the contents entered in a field on page 1 of the document. Example:

Page Header: Reference: John Doe

Page One of the Template: Customer Name: John Doe

So How do I get "John Doe", when entered in "Customer Name:" field to copy to the Header "Reference:" field?
Thank You,
pscaseys

Writer is a little clunky for this, but it can be done using a field for the first instance, then displaying that field in the page header. Changing the first one will change all the headers as well.

Perhaps I am not stating my problem clearly. How do I get what I enter into the Customer Name field to automatically appear in the Page Header Reference field? I understand that the page header repeats on all pages.

I am open to suggestions. Which program do you suggest I use for creating forms?

There is no "page header reference field". Or, maybe I should say, they are all the same field.

The first instance is where you assign a value to the field; the page header includes a separate instance of the same field that simply displays the value.

I don't know what's best for making a form. I guess it depends on exactly what kind of form you want to make. OOo is great for making printed forms ;-)

How then do I assign the same field to the header?

Hit F1 and type "reference" into the index tab. Choose chapter "inserting cross references"
Please, edit this topic's initial post and add "[Solved]" to the subject line if your problem has been solved.

I've always done it through Insert > Field > ...

OK. I have it figured out. Thanks for all your help. This form is used by Texas Real Estate Inspectors. The template resides on their laptops. I have set text fields for their notes, comments and findings as well as fields to insert Supporting Photographs from their digital cameras. It can now be completed in a few minutes and printed onsite. Thanks again.
