Are you using OpenOfice 3.1 or LibreOffice? If LibreOffice, which version and you should change your Forum signature to report that.

Are there illustrations or tables in your document?

Have you adjusted /Tools/Options/OpenOffice.org : Memory settings to their maximum?

http://abiword.org can open the file.
As a Windows user you can always resort to Microsoft's viewer
Please, edit this topic's initial post and add "[Solved]" to the subject line if your problem has been solved.

It pulled down my AOO 3.4.1 running on Ubuntu. If time later I'll try on another machine running XP.

@Villeroy: anything strange in the opened file?

Quick tests on this file show it now opening with OOo products and showing the same problem with Word viewer at about page 22. The file header says this is a Word 97 file. My guess something has been inserted which is causing a load loop.

I've tried with AOo 3.4.1 on Windows XP; it crashes AOO, and doesn't offer to recover on next startup. As the OP says, it eats all the memory both on XP and on Ubuntu.

On another Ubuntu machine it used 3GB of memory, but didn't touch the Swap file. Then AOO crashed, giving a message that the computer didn't have sufficient free memory to analyse the problem.

My tests on XP confirms the above although Word Viewer does open the file on XP (my previous test was using my Wine installation on OS X). Word 2010 also opens it.

But, StarOffice 8 does open the file while StarOffice 7 does not. One of the reasons I have kept these programs on my systems is that they do sometimes open DOC files which do not open with the 3.x.x DOC filters.

@PGAGA: any idea of what is causing the problem? I ask only out of curiosity.

Since Word DOC is a proprietary format, I suspect it is some minor feature or bug of that format - likely involving how one of the graphics is embedded around page 20. The reason StarOffice 8 will open it is that, I believe, SO uses a licensed filter which is more compatible that with OOo.

What puzzles me is that SO8 and SO5.2 will open the file (although there are code page problems with 5.2), but SO7 reports that it is not a WinWord97 file.

- I have recently removed graphic in page 22 of the document. But it is not better. And oOo is not crash, memory is still overflowed.
- My project convert many file doc, docx, ppt, pptx -> pdf. And in the large data, I converted normally. Over 1000 documents / 1 times, have a the document which is the same the document is overflowed memory.
- And I want to ask: Which solution to detect the document with the above problem?

StarOffice 8 can be downloaded from staroffice.com.

SO8 is based on OpenOffice.org 2.x. I tested the file with NeoOffice 2.2.6 which is based on the same code and the file opened (so I may be wrong about the commercial filter). I would suggest downloading a copy of the last OOo 2.x and see if it will open the file. 2.4.3 can be found here:

LO 3.6.x has major stability issues with windows OS (launch, file association, etc).

Because of that I moved off LO to OO 3.4....all old files work for me
