[Solved] Applying a different template

Post by Al Stevens »

I have documents written using a template with custom styles. I wish to apply a different template to the documents with custom styles of the same name but with different formatting. An example of this usage would be a manuscript converted to e-book then print interior formats. Here's how I do it now:
  1. Copy the original document's content to the clipboard
  2. Open a new blank document with the alternate template
  3. Paste the document contents into the new document
Is there a more elegant way to do that? I searched the docs and didn't find the topic addressed.

Thanks, Tom. My way is simpler. The template changer extension requires the user to find where the template file itself is in the disk system then navigate to it. Unless I'm doing something wrong, of course. The other template commands give the user a dialog with the categories and names of templates. I'm writing a tutorial for non-texhnical readers who are authors. The template change extension would be a bit overwhelming for them.

I believe you could use Insert > File in place of the open/copy/paste. I'm not sure it's better, since new users are probably comfortable with copy/paste, but it does require fewer steps.

If you change the settings under Tools-->Options-->Openoffice.org-->General to "Use Openoffice Dialogs" then when you use the Template changer the user is taken directly to the templates. See attached screen shot.

Both suggestions are better than what I'm doing. Thanks.
