What folders and files do the rpms create?

Does anyone know of a page saying what the rpms do? I have been warned off installing rpms not in the distro's repositories and am increasingly reluctant to install AOO without knowing particularly whether they may overwrite existing files or folders.

As far as I understand, rpm will never overwrite anything--unless you tell it to.

You can see a list of the installed files by:
$ rpm -qlp package-file.rpm

I always recommend using the OOo packaged by your distro, if at all possible.

Good point.

I still recommend whatever is packaged by the distribution, even though I think AOO is "safer". But if you prefer AOO, or if you want to have it just for testing or something, then you're absolutely right: you have to install it yourself.

The install is a good bit simpler now, since the LibO and AOO packages no longer use conflicting package names; using rpm is generally safe, if you're careful, but still not something I'd recommend for a casual user.

It would be a lot simpler if the installation repos were available for AOO; maybe someone will set that up, if it's not already.

Not counting the desktop integration package, the full AOO install is on two folders inside /opt so no problem at all: AFAIK no distro use /opt nowadays, that folder is for "optional" stuff. The desktop integration package add some stuff on /usr like desktop files and icons: quite inoffensive too.

Thank you. I just tried to use acknak's code to find out where v3.3 is installed. A few years ago the installer used to write to /etc and /usr.

I have located package files previously but for the life of me I cannot think what to call the package. I've tried these:

You mean there are OOo files there? That's really odd. I don't remember ever seeing the rpm packages from OOo install anywhere except /opt, and everything was under one directory up until OOo 3 and then it split into two, both under /opt.

I could be wrong, for sure, but that seems really strange.

The main problem I have (now that AOO and LibO are using distinct package names) is that the installed packages don't have a single common string in the names, so it gets dicey trying to remember all the relevant package names when it comes time to upgrade. Maybe I could just use the canned "upgrade" function of rpm, but I don't want to depend on the packages always upgrading cleanly, so I remove the old packages before installing the new ones. I run a command to list all the package names before I install them, and save the names in a file. Then, when it's time to upgrade, I can have rpm remove all the packages saved in that list.

I delete an existing version using Synaptic (the distro's package manager) and rpm to install a new version. I have been using 'rpm -Uvh' but I'll change that to 'rpm -ivh'.

I've no rpm experience, but under Ubuntu I found it best (necessary?) to uninstall LibreOffice before installing OpenOffice or AOO. I used Synaptic (the package manager) to remove libreoffice-core. If LibO or Ubuntu OOo (in earlier days) was not removed the OOo/AOO failed because of existing packages.

Fedora guys are using something called "epoch" for their LibO packages. I'm not an expert, but what I understand is that their (not the official) LibO packages are instructed to erase everything with a name related to "openoffice". They did that to "avoid conflicts" ( ) when switching from OOo to LibO...

As I said on the install guide,(1) if you want to use AOO together with LibO on Fedora or ubuntu, you need to uninstall the LibO they distribute and install only vanilla packages.

I'm not sure I understand what you mean. I've been running both together now for the last month, since I upgraded to Fedora 17, and haven't noticed any problems.

I've only made minor adjustments:
Skip the rpm dependency checks: --nodeps (they're not needed anyway for installing something like AOO)
Manually remove the AOO packages when I install a new version
Skip the desktop integration stuff for AOO; I start it from the command line. If I want desktop access, I use the Fedora-integrated LibO

Should there be that much difference running OpenOffice and LibreOffice in parallel from running two versions of LibreOffice in parallel?

The only things I note are:

- With LibreOffice and OpenOffice in parallel you don't need to worry about your profile locations since they have different names

- There is no desktop integration for (in my case) OpenOffice

- It's a heavy bit of software to be running in one's Home directory – not sure about trying to move it somewhere else

[My main reason for installing OpenOffice at the current time was to see if Linguistic Tools worked with it on Linux; it did, and it does with LibreOffice 3.5.6 on Windows (LibreOffice 3.5.6 on Linux no go) – but that's a topic for another thread or a communication to the author if it's something he doesn't already know about.]

Oops. No, I see now that you are correct. I thought everything was working, but now I see that the last upgrade for the Fedora LibO failed because of the dependency issue (apparently) coming from some part of AOO.

Sorry for the mistake.

It should work ok if I just install the AOO rpms under a separate package database; I don't understand the dependency issue well enough to really do anything about it.

Here's one way around the problem (at least it works so far): install the AOO rpms using a private rpm database, something like this:
# mkdir /root/rpmdb
# cd / ... /RPMS # the downloaded RPMs are here
# rpm --nodeps --dbpath /root/rpmdb -Uvh *.rpm

That installs all the AOO components, in two dorectories under /opt:
/opt/openoffice.org
/opt/openoffice.org3

With the AOO rpms installed using the private package database, the normal Fedora update of LibO works correctly--it doesn't even know that AOO is installed.
