[Solved] Restore Windows dialog will not close

Post by ragtoprider60 »

I'm locked out of Open Office. Whenever I launch OO or OO for Kids, a "Restore Windows" dialogue box appears (the application Open Office was forced to quit while trying to restore its windows. Do you want to try to restore its windows again?) with non-responsive buttons that neither allow me to restore or decline restoration. I am locked out of accessing preferences or properly closing out of OpenOffice as a result. I have to move the annoying button out of the way and force quit.I have deleted and reinstalled the app to no avail. I have it installed on other iMacs and it works great...its only the teacher workstation that is having issues.
Any help appreciated....specifically what if any files need to be deleted from the library/preferences?

This is a problem specific to Mac OS X ver.10.7 (Lion).
Delete the file "org.openoffice.script.savedState". It is located this folder: /Users/<user name>/Library/Saved Application State
The user/library folder is hidden in Lion. In finder, Option-click the Go menu to locate it.

Resolved!
Larry, thank you for taking the time to provide such a detailed and helpful reply.
The more I use OO the more I like it...the fact that I can use OO for Kids with my younger students and then seamlessly migrate to the full version for the older ones is really practical and very effective.
Thanks again for getting me up and running again.

Dear Hagar, many thanks for raising this issue a short while before I came across it, and
Dear Larry, thank you very much for your highly effective solution.
Nonetheless,
OpenOffice 3.3.0 opened perfectly and promptly asked me to register again, but as I think the page it directed me to must have been from before the transfer from Oracle to Apache, there is no web page there for it.
OpenOffice 3.4.0 from Apache also opened perfectly again, which it had refused to do with the restore windows problem, but the system also asked me if I really wanted to open a new application downloaded from the internet, so everything was pristine and new again.
Yours,

A very clear explanation. Great directions, even including the nuance of using the option key to find library. Thank you. :bravo:

I tried the fix you posted but the window still remains and I of course can't click it, and can not open any files and can not quit openOffice. What now??

No I couldn't find the file"org.open office.script.savedState". in order to delete it as I was unable to find the "/Users/<username>/Libary/SavedApplication State" folder in the Finder Go menu.
So anyone got any other ideas?

Follow the instructions. The folder "SavedApplication State" isn't in the Go menu, it is in the user library, which is hidden in Lion.

Since you didn't follow the written instructions, got to this post with screenshots

Larry,
Thank you for your expert advice. Deleting the file solved the problem.
OS 10.7.5 Lion has other problems. Apple did not think about what we need to transfer.

iPhoto (Lion Version) did not transfer my 9000+ photos. X11 iPhoto ($15.00 from the apps store) solved this dilemma.
My "Address Book" with 600+ email would not transfer to the new "Lion" user.
I now have to use 2 users with one to use for my old photos and email addresses.
I could not transfer all my old data to the newly created "Lion" user. It is a pain to keep switching users.

Two years ago I was in Saskatoon attending the USA/Canada Lions Leadership Forum. Great place!

Open Office is a great application and they deserve anything we donate to them.

I have the same problem after upgrading to Mountain Lion on my new MacBook Air. I am a new mac user. I found the library folder but it is not under the user folder in my computer. There is no "Saved Application State" folder that I can find. Searching for the file listed above gave no results. Are the instructions different for Mountain Lion? I installed the Open Office version 3.4.1.

Help is very much appreciated as this is my son's new computer and we are unable now to shut down because open office will not close, preventing shut down.

Thanks!

As far as I know the instructions are the same in Mountain Lion

Thank you, Larry! The trick was to hold down the option button while clicking the go menu. I was two finger clicking and stupidly thought that was the same thing, as I did find a file called "Library" that way. I have a long way to go learning apple ways, but am very thankful to you for helping me solve this problem. Yes, the problem seems fixed in my case, with Mountain Lion.

Hi Erbe, how did you manage force quit open office when Restore Windows is still there? I cannot even force shutdown my Mac...
Thank you.

Hold down the option key, then click and hold on the OpenOffice icon in your dock, and choose "Force Quit" from the menu that appears.

Option-clicking the Go button didn´t work for me to get to the library. What DID work was ticking in "library" in "search" in "Help", and then there came this arrow that pointed to the invisible "library" thing in the Go menu. When I clicked on that arrow I went straight to the library. (Not exactly user friendly...).

You helped me with this not long ago. I am now experiencing the same problem. However I can go to Users/dougstocks but at that point there is no Library, so I can not proceed further. I also tried a Finder search for a file named org.openoffice.script.savedState but find nothing.

The solution is the same as in the message you quoted.

This for Larry Igussas or other Mac specialist.
I posted the following problem on the forum. You responded to a similar issue with Lion. I have Yosemite; do you know if the problem / solution is the same? Many thanks.
Dave

"I have a pop-up msg when opening OpenOffice: "The last time you opened OpenOffice it unexpectedly quit...do you want to reopen its windows again? If you choose not to reopen, you may have to open & position the windows yourself". You are then given 2 boxes - don't reopen & reopen. Neither work.

I cannot get into any files & the only way I can quit open office is to orchestrate a 'force quit' of the whole computer. Upon reopening, the same error msg exists. I have moved to trash any reference to open office I can find in my file manager (finder) in the hope of just reinstalling open office, but I still have the ability to call up open office but am then faced with the same pop up & inability to do anything else with it. It does not affect any other running of the computer".
