Comparison of Word 2010 with OpenOffice.org Writer 3.5

Post by Will Pittenger »

I was evaluating Office 2010 as OpenOffice.org seems static. I don't use modules in office suites other than word processors much. So that is all I reviewed. I have attached my review in both DOCX and ODT formats.

At present OpenOffice is happiest with 32 bit Java 1.6. Installing Java 1.7 may cause various instabilities or inadequacies, depending on what functions you use in OpenOffice. Java update usually deletes the older 32 bit Java 1.6, so this must be explicitly reinstalled, by download from
http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/ ... 37595.html
The 32 bit is the 586 version.
Edit: Note also that Apache OpenOffice is currently at v3.4

This is quite a comprehensive comparison of the text document components. Note that Word came out on top in only 3 of 22 categories.

One of those was Stability. Since AOO 3.4 is quite new, people interested in a more stable version of OpenOffice may want to consider OOo 3.3. I would expect the stability of AOO 3.4 to improve as 3.4.1 and 3.4.2 are released. Anyone installing 3.4.anything on top of a previous installation of OOo should install a new user profile. Experience has shown that obsolete profiles can cause crashes and other mysterious behavor in AOO/OOo.

I'm not sure where you're getting the "OpenOffice.org Writer 3.5" listed in the title of this topic, unless it's Libre Office 3.5, a separate branch from AOO. My impression, from reading posts here, is that Libre Office offers more features but less stability than Open Office. http://www.openoffice.org/download/ offers 3.4 to me. If 3.5 is one of the developer's versions of AOO, it is pre-release and can't be expected to provide optimal stability.

Just a typo. It was 3.4.0.

I find it interesting that the DOCX file (60.5 KiB) is 50% larger than the ODT file (40.27 KiB).
AOO 4.1.5 Win7Pro/2KPro/XP & *nix (But my heart is still VAX/VMS)
