Replacement for Outlook 97?

Post by dculp »

Does OO have a replacement for Microsoft Outlook (not Outlook Express)? If so, does it import Outlook's pst file (from Outlook 97)?

If not, do you know of an inexpensive/free replacement for Outlook 97 that will import Outlook's pst file?

Win XP Pro.

Thanks,

No, OOo does not. I use Mozilla Sunbird, but don't know, if it can import .pst. files. Note, Sunbird does not have e-mail capabilities, you may want to try Mozilla LIghtning.

Hi and welcome to the community!

So far, no Outlook replacement is available in OpenOffice.
But there is some people asking for it, and there are also some plans to include a PIM (personal information manager) application into OpenOffice.

I think this thread is worth reading if you want to know some details.
It also includes recommendations on possible Outlook replacement solutions.
Also this Wikipedia article could help.

I only use Outlook for Contacts and Tasks. I don't use it for email.

You can use any mail client you want. OpenOffice.org does not have a mail client that is delivered as part of the package (then again, neither does MS Office... Outlook is a separate program). There is nothing stopping you from continuing to use Outlook after you install OpenOffice.org.

A lot of people use Thunderbird as their mail client. If you add in the Lightning extension for calendaring, you will likely have all you need. I believe PST files can be imported into Thunderbird if you use Outlook to export them to Outlook Express and then into Thunderbird (I cannot verify since I refuse to use Outlook)

Another possibility is Evolution (there is a Windows version).

There are many other choices as well... I just named two options.

Thunderbird: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/thunderbird/
Thunderbird addons: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/
Lightning: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/addon/2313

This may or may not work... some people report it works, and others get nothing. PST Import plugin: http://linux.softpedia.com/get/Communic ... 3014.shtml

Evolution: http://shellter.sourceforge.net/evolution/ Likely will not work on Vista... if you are unfortunate enough to be saddled with Vista.
