Immediate crash after registration wizard OOo 3.3 Win64

Post by smprovistas »

Having a problem on a new OOo installation on Windows 7 64-bit Professional. OOo immediately crashes after the registration wizard runs, whether it's closed by pressing the cancel button or completed by filling out the forms (and choosing never to register).

Things I have tried:
Scan for viruses/malware with MS Security Essentials and MBAM
uninstall/reinstall (with and without bundled JRE... JRE installed on Windows is Java 6 Update 31 from java.com)
Remove user profile directory in AppData\Roaming\OpenOffice.org\3\
Check Windows application event log -- no entries.
Task manager shows that the soffice.bin processes immediately disappear after the registration wizard closes.

Anything else to try?

Try Revo Uninstaller Free http://www.revouninstaller.com/revo_uni ... nload.html to completely remove the install. Use the most aggressive settings. Run CCleaner http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/builds to clean the registry. Try again. Make sure you use the 32bit java, OOo will not work with the 64bit version.

Good suggestions... I tried them, but still no luck. I specifically downloaded and installed the 32-bit JRE from Java.com as well, just to be sure.

Still exactly the same behavior...

You can try to remove IE9 if installed, there are reports here about such an incompatibility IIRC.

It may also be useful to restart Windows after making such a change, before trying OpenOffice again on the altered system.

The two fixes are 1) to remove Internet Explorer 9 (IE8 is automatically restored), or 2) (best) to disable automatic checking for updates. This latter you do by performing a Repair Install and selecting the option _not_ to automatically check for updates.

If having tried either or both of these fixes (and rebooted your computer) and the problem is not solved, then there is some other problem and we need more information.

Fix 1 does it - I don't use Iexplore so I didn't realise that 9 was installed on this laptop - uninstalling IE9 cured it, many thanks

If the urge comes over you to use IE9 (and an icepack on the head and lying down in the dark doesn't cure that :-) ) Try the other option, which you can access under OpenOffice's /Tools /Options - can't remember just where it is but it is there.

I reinstalled and the launcher started for the first time. I disabled online update, and seems do seem to be working now. It definitely seems like there is something to this, whether it's IE9 or Windows 7. I disabled IE9 and it still crashed.

Uninstalling IE9 (via Windows install list) worked for me (although I pretty much use Firefox exclusively). Does anyone know if/when the incompatibility between IE9 and OOo 3.3 Win64 will be fixed? I get a bit nervous about Microsoft sneaking in an IE9 update without me being aware of it.

THnx Bill

There are many users who don't have the problem so it's rather difficult to say if it will be really tackled by the devs.
