Who is owner "OpenOffice.org" brand?

Post by quest-88 »

Hey

We all know Oracle donated source code of OpenOffice.org, but after that Apache decide use new (old..) brand, OpenOffice (without .org), for self project. So who has old trendmark and if no one use that, why The Document Foundation can't get it?

As I understand it, The Apache Software Foundation also owns the OpenOffice.org trademark. They are using the openoffice.org domain as you can see from the URL of this forum, which is hosted by Apache.
OpenOffice 4.1 on Windows 10 and Linux Mint

Exactly. It is quite common for a single organization to claim multiple trademarks for the same product, e.g., "Coca-Cola", "Coke", "The Real Thing", etc.

OpenOffice without the .org is a Dutch product, older than OpenOffice.org - and the reason why OOo isn't called OpenOffice.

Actually, the Dutch use is "Open Office" (with a space) and it is for a computer services company, not a software product.

Along with contributing most of the code from the OpenOffice.org project to the Apache Software Foundation (ASF) (which the Apache OpenOffice podling is now working actively on!), Oracle also transferred the registered trademarks for OpenOffice.org, the gull logo, and various other parts of the brand to the ASF - both in the US and in a number of other countries around the world.

To answer more simply, the ASF owns the OpenOffice.org brand, and is using it to continue providing downloads and support for past OpenOffice.org releases here at this site. The Apache OpenOffice podling is also working on a great new product - based on this code - to be called Apache OpenOffice in the near future.

Along with this forum, the Apache OpenOffice podling's official blog is a great way to learn about what will be in Apache OpenOffice and how the community works:

Correct, but rather irrelevant - it doesn't matter if you google for OpenOffice or "Open Office", even if you add the name of the owner of the company with the space, you will still mostly find sites referring to the software suite. And there are even websites that sell "Open Office", with the space, but still it's the software suite. Practically speaking, the distinction is pointless by now.
