[Solved] A space where I can't type or install anything!!

In the attachment you will see a double space where I only want one space, between 'LIKE WORDS ENDING-------& 'NOTE: All these words----- I can't close up the two lines. I did a search first but couldn't see anything that is like this problem. Any help appreciated. robinp

Put the cursor at the beginning of the "Note..." line and hit Ctrl+Backspace.

Paragraph 1 is "Section 3" with a lot of spaces and tabs. Paragraph 2 is only spaces and tabs. Paragraph 3 is some tabs then "Like words … in Spanish". Paragraph 4 begins with 232 spaces(!!), then some tabs, and "Note … gender". It's hard to tell that there are 232 spaces at the beginning of the 4th paragraph because View > Non-printing characters seems to be confused by an enormous number of spaces. You can remove the 232 spaces by positioning the cursor at the beginning of the 4th line, then using Shift+DownArrow, then Delete. Your document should be easier to use after you've deleted them.

You really need to learn about Styles. You are effectively using a sophisticated word processor like a 1950's typewriter.

The paragraphs Section 3, Like , and Note should be formatted with a style that automatically centres them

I would suggest that rather than using tabs in the main body of the text that you use a 3 column table.

Well fellows, let's see if I can answer some of your suggestions. I can't post it as 'Solved', because it isn't. I only need a single space between the titles & there's a double one between 'Like words....... & Note:.....Even if you backspace, there's then no line space at all.
And jrkrideau you are damn near right when you state I seem to be using it like a 1950's typewriter. You see I started this project over ten years ago on a used IBM laptop with Windows 98, & without any connection to the internet. I basically used it as a typewriter, & without any help from any forums to help interpret the 'Help' section. The work was then transferred to another newer laptop with Windows XP & a connection to the internet. Since I started, I have completed 51 sections of 21,581 lines in the old MS .wps format. I registered with 'OO' on the advice of somebody in another forum, because of problems with the alignment of columns associated with the .wps system. I then asked a senior member if it was advisable to transfer everything over to 'OO' & I was advised I should. However, on transferring each separate section, all the words, lines & columns got all jumbled up in the 'OO' format. So I have had to sort all that out first. I have had real help in using custom tabs, & 'Styles & Formating' from other members. So I'm having to reset everything, because I used regular default standard tab settings before. I hadn't got around to centering the titles on the sample section I downloaded, I should have done that first. The first section alone contains 78 pages so you can appreciate the problems I have had in sorting it all out. I only joined a month ago, so please bear with me as I learn as I'm going along. I started this project when I retired to keep my mind active. It started in longhand & has progressed to the 'sophisticated' 'OO' word processing system. I'm now nearly 79, & I can see I will be having difficulty understanding some of the 'Help' data & some of the instructions you members give me. I already have a publisher set up, it's just a matter of presenting the document in a decent format.

The reason you can't close the space between "Like Words ..." line and "Note... " line is that there is a single space after the newline (paragraph mark) that closes "Like Word..." line.

Try turning on / View / Non printing characters (the same command turns it off); pressing the backwards P button on the toolbar will do the same, both on and off. Now your newlines will be shown by backwards P characters (recte "Pilcrow"), spaces by a raised dot, tabs by a right pointing arrow, and line feeds ny a hooked left pointing arrow. This command at least will let you see what characters are causing stray formatting.

As jrkrideau says, you really need to learn Styles. It is possible that with the correct styles defined a half day's editing using Find and Replace will tidy up your whole document.

RoryOF, that really helped. I can see now by clicking on the 'reverse P' what is going on. It does help to see any stray formatting as you said. Any way I tinkered about & solved the problem, but unfortunately I don't know what I actually did to fix it. Let's just call it solved. Thanks again guys. robinp
