What is the current status of the Apache OpenOffice Project?

Post by vea1083 »

I read that the project has released its first Linux build. I was wondering if the project is anywhere near to release a public BETA...

As far as I know all builds are not yet publicly released, as they are still in process of copyright clearance. Subscribe to the mailing lists and get your information direct from the source. Subscription information is at

There is a build bot that publish automatic builds here:
http://ci.apache.org/projects/openoffice/install/
For now, only .deb files automatically compiled on ubuntu, 64 bits.
Use them at your own risk!!
Edit: The package OOo_3.4.0_Linux_x86-64_install-arc_en-US-2011-12-12.tar.gz (or any other data) contains the compiled binaries but not packed at deb nor rpm nor anything: just the directories with the apps, ready to test

Does this means that Apache is about to finish the IP clearance of the project?

Thanks for the link!

Apache on Tuesday is releasing a statement about its OpenOffice efforts, entitled "Open Letter to the Open Document Format Ecosystem," which notes the planned 3.4 release, tentatively slated for early 2012.
"[When] two codebases spring from the same roots and yet are competing for the same users and asymmetrically licensed, there is bound to be friction over contributions, usage and more. Efforts to bridge the two projects have not been successful."..............................................
..............................A representative of the Document Foundation, which oversees LibreOffice, noted his organization is free to use OpenOffice.org code. "It is then natural that the Apache OpenOffice code has the special intention from our developers and everything Apache OpenOffice releases that is of our interest will be considered for cherry-picking for integration in LibreOffice," said Oliver Hallot, of the Document Foundation board. But LibreOffice is ahead of OpenOffice.org, which may make it harder to include Apache code, he said.
