Power failure and lost my essay for Uni

Post by sambamor »

When I try to open my document I get the ASCII Filter Options then I click ok, and when I opened it in a read copy only I got a bunch of ######. Is there way I can recover the document?

Try to find a document with a similar name but a different extension on your computer, there may be a backup somewhere. Usually, this type of event has dramatic consequences and so many people have completely lost their documents.

Hi and welcome to the forum!

Sadly, you're not alone, see: 22 pages term paper replaced with pound signs.

Check also the temporary folder of the system (see in OOo Tools>Options>OOo>Paths). If there are folders like sgmlf.tmp with a file having the same name inside, make a copy of that file, rename it in .odt and cross your fingers.

NB: it seems that 3.3 is much less impacted.

First, thank you for trying to help me, really very kind of you. Second, I gathered that I am practically hopeless from other "computer geeks" I showed the document, and even if followed your advices, there's no file in my temporary folders, nor anywhere on my computer with the same name; Hagar, seen that you replied to somebody with the same problem to email you the file...can I also do that as last resort? After yet another negative examination, I'd lose hope definitively and redo the essay from scratch.

Please let me know, thanks again.

You can try to send it (hagar.delest<at>laposte.net) but I fear that the file is definitively lost.

Please consider a Dropbox or SugarSync folder for OOo/LibO documents since these automated cloud backup services are free and include back-versions of your documents in case of file corruption.
