ANNOUNCE: OASIS ODF 1.2 Standard Approved

Postby orcmid » Sat Oct 01, 2011 3:44 am

The OASIS ODF 1.2 Committee Specification 01 has been successfully advanced to an OASIS Standard, http://lists.oasis-open.org/archives/tc-announce/201109/msg00010.html.

The final ballot results for approval of OASIS Standard ODF 1.2 are at http://www.oasis-open.org/committees/ballot.php?id=2115.

OASIS ODF TC Chair Rob Weir has a nice summary on his blog, http://www.robweir.com/blog/2011/09/odf12-approved.html. He lists the names of the contributors of 1.2 from the specification. Some of those names may be familiar here.

The specifications are available on-line. The approved documents can be found at http://docs.oasis-open.org/office/v1.2/cs01/. The file OpenDocument-v1.2-cs01.zip is a compressed archive of a complete set in both ODT and PDF formats and with all auxilliary files. A set with new covers reflecting their standard status will become available shortly.

These are not user guides and they are not about software, such as OpenOffice.org, that implements the ODF format. They are about the standardized formats of the files that we encounter as ODT, ODS, ODP, etc.

Yes, I suspect that the submission to ISO/IEC JTC1 will be pulled together by year end, and then there will be several months going through the ISO process. If there are ISO-ballot comments that require changes, I suspect that there would at least be an Errata for OASIS ODF 1.2, and the ISO publication would follow. There is no reason to expect major difficulties and there should be an ISO standard before the end of 2012, possibly as early as Summer.

One of the Microsoft members of the ODF TC at OASIS just published his perspective at http://blogs.msdn.com/b/dmahugh/archive/2011/10/01/oasis-odf-1-2-approved.aspx. There is no information on releases or features or Microsoft plans, of course. I expect to learn more by the time of the April 2012 ODF plugfest in Brussels.
