File corrupted?! Help!

Post by JustOrdinary »

Hi, I'm new here.

I don't know if there's a standard format for doing these requests. I apologize in advance if I'm breaking protocol by posting a thread in here directly or something. I've tried scouring the internet for a solution but either my search terms are too vague or there simply exists no means to recover the data I've lost.

Search hasn't helped here either so, yeah, here i am.

I'm running Windows 7 ultimate, 32 bit.
I was using OpenOffice 3.3 Writer last night to type out another chapter to a story I've been writing, when suddenly a power fluctuation caused my PC to shut down. Upon restarting, I let OpenOffice run its standard data recovery. It then prompted me to open it as read-only or as a copy for editing (it's done this before, np. There's an issue with the electricity in my area. When that prompt occurs, I usually just save the copy under a different name because of the rights issue or something).

So the file's there, but the content's just gone. Well, at least I think it's gone because instead of words, the entire document is filled with ############# for roughly 3 pages. To clarify, the file opens just fine. There is no error message or anything of the sort. It's just that the file contains nothing of any worth.

I talked to a friend, he says its corrupt and irretrievable. I'm hoping he's wrong because I don't have any other copy of that file. My short term memory's not so great, so it's kind of impossible for me to replicate the story exactly as it was. Plus, it's going to be a pain to have to write all that content again.

Please help me, I don't know what to do. Is it still recoverable?
Medical Journal - Copy.odt
(26.3 KiB) Downloaded 277 times

Edit: Backup folder in user profile is empty.
File is saved in .odt format
Uploaded file in case it would help.
Attempted using third-party 'systools office writer recovery software'. It states the data is missing from the file.
Opening the file in Wordpad or Notepad results in a blank paragraph. It can be highlighted so there's SOMETHING there, oddly enough.

Edit2: In the recovery folder, there's two log folders. I'm hoping theres something in this jargon that might be helpful? I do see the name of my file in there a couple of times.

I think they might be files created by the third party software instead of openoffice's inbuilt software though. Still, anything that might help I guess?

Sorry, there's no recoverable data in your document. It's nothing but zeros.

Sadly, nothing to do: 22 page term paper replaced with pound signs.

Check the temporary folder of the system (see in OOo Tools>Options>OOo>Paths). If there are folders like sgmlf.tmp with a file having the same name inside, make a copy of that file, rename it in .odt and cross your fingers.

Else, nothing to do I fear.

You may be able to recover some of the file using the Previous Versiolns feature in Windows 7. Right-click the file in Windows Explorer and select "Restore Previous Versions".
