OOo Calc or Writer freezes in Ubuntu 8.04 Beta

Hello, new here...

Am running OOo 2.4 (strangely the splash screen and the about info shows 2.3..) on Ubuntu 8.04 beta
I run spreadsheet yesterday and writer, as well as today 2 times writer and all the 4 times while doing whatever, my computer froze completely and only a restart helped. It ONLY happened when I had openoffice spreadsheet or writer open and was editing documents, otherwise it never happens with any other program.

Now I do not know if this is an ubuntu problem or an openoffice 2.4 together with ubuntu 8.04 beta problem. Does somebody have similar problems and knows a solution? Maybe it's just because of the beta state?

Unless you desperately need one of the extra features of the Debian/Ubunu's release, do yourself a favour and install the original by Sun. Refer to [Ubuntu] Installing OOo on Debian and Co.

..actually, no...no further need of that release, just upgraded to it and supposed it would work. but after reading the link you posted...THANKS! will do the installation of the original version.

I would like to signal the same issue, on ubuntu 8.04 LTS (so no beta). I did follow the advice just under, removing my ubuntu defaults packages for the debs from openoffice directly but the freezing is still happening.

Before I had as well reset compiz to its default.

What would you suggest ?

Try to rename your OOo user profile (~/.openoffice.org2).

Done... But it didn't change anything : I've just rebooted !

I hope it doesn't harm too much my laptop...

Does it occur with any documents or just some of them? Any specific file format?

It has happenned with odt, doc and ods files. I didn't use any other formats.

1. Disable Compiz---at least temporarily for troubleshooting
2. Try the steps listed under Troubleshooting: OpenOffice.org won't start--especially the steps about themes, video drivers, and accessibility

I've let Openoffice on since I've turned off compiz and no freeze. It looks like solving the issue... Do you have any idea of what in Compiz makes this bug ?

I think the problems comes from the Ubuntu package of OOo.

Try to use the official version (Sun's), it should be compatible with Compiz (see first reply).

I was using the packages from Sun in fact, having already removed the ubuntu packages.

Regarding my issue, I can now use OpenOffice but not Compiz at the same time...

It could be a bug in a window manager theme, X.org, Compiz, or video driver. You may need an X11 guru to figure it out. If the bug is reproducible, report it to the Ubuntu bug tracker and see what happens. Make sure to mention which WM theme you use, which video driver, and the model of your video card.
